St Thomas and the Holy Rood in Melling, built in 1835 to replace the Holy Rood chapel which stood from 1195.
The original Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral. I dont remember it though. does anyone know where it was? Same site as the new one perhaps?

That's a mock-up of the one that was meant to be there. Only the crypt was built unfortunately, on which the present Cathedral of Christ the King is now.
So its the Cathedral that never was. Blimey, I never knew that. I have this postcard too.
The only part of that Cathedral that stands is the Crypt! Everything above the Crypt is the 'new' Cathedral.
Well you learn something everyday. Amazing!
I heard today that the church where I met my wife and got married is going to be demolished due to structural damage. Calvary Independent Baptist Church, Dovecot.

They gave the original design up as a bad idea, when they realised they'd never have the money to pay for it,about 1961/2!(I remember paying into a cathedral collection,in school!) It would have been one of,if not the, biggest cathedrals in the world! The present one was up and ready,in a relatively short time, and cost much less.
Incidentally, though Lutyens crypt and that cathedral was obviously the site of the current one, the original Met cathedral was built at St Edwards college, St. Domingo Road and served as Our Lady Immaculate.

.
I worked on the Anglican one for a few months and became interested in both buildings. Concrete is made from Portland stone so it's easy to see why people think the RC cathedral is made of it. I mentioned on another thread that the paving stones up the north side of the Anglical cathedral having been originally used as the platform for Exchange Station. Not a lot of people know that!;)
I used to go to St Stephens Youth Club in the 1960s. It was very well run and the building was brand new and right next door to the church. All the usual things like snooker, table tennis, a snack bar and disco, but they had classes in drawing and a soundproof room where they showed short documentary films. All run by volunteers and very dedicated people they were too. It was also non-denominational so your mates from Our Lady's and Belle Vale Sally Army could go!

I think the St Peter and St Paul church started out as a Welsh Chapel in 1904. It was taked over by the Society of St Vincent de Paul in the 1980s (might have been a bit earlier) and as you say, it maintained the Latin mass, which was a feature of that Society.

Nice photos Ross.
Nice photos Steve. I put into the collection for the steeple of St Pauls Church in Seacombe, looks like I never put in enough.

I recently wrote a short piece for a newsletter at work about the views from St. George's Hill. From this I learnt that the church was one of three known as the "Iron Churches" due to the large amount of cast iron used in their construction. It was the earliest of the three churches built by John Cragg the owner of the Mersy Iron Foundry.

Disappointingly unable to make the Festival at the weekend. Particulalrly wanted to catch up with my Aunt at her stall where she had a lot of information on the old ice rink. Plus I wanted to pick her brains about other hidden gems such as St. Georges Hill, places that have been right in front of me for years but I've not seen them. Aunt Sis being a Blue Badge guide should help!!
During the 1970's I was at hugh Baird College doing my A Levels and photography was one of them, I took many photo's around the Docklands and this looks very Church like, but I don't know if it really was?
Anyone know?

Could it be a Hiring hall or equivalent for dock workers or ships crew?
I don't know :(
Unfortunately i don't have anymore of it showing if the roof had a cross or not.
