nights steve proctor was DJ .The system sounds familiar what era was it 80's? or later .Planet X was another punk goth club in various places around the town
First club,at 16('68),was the La Bamba in Prescot Rd.Then the Cavern,Mardi,She,Beechcomber,Babalou,Blue Angel,The Back of the Moon(Billy Butlers club after the Mardi)The Uni,Moonstone,Oscars,,Whispers,The Warehouse,Stairways(in Birkenhead)The Spinners club above Gregsons Well,The Folkways, above 'Lulus' and 'Charlies' aka the Blue Dolphin plus any pub that had LIVE music.I still have my membership cards for the Cavern and the Back of the Moon,I wish I had all the cash I spent in the above.
Phew. You should be dead by now Gnasher. Like you imply though, we'd be on our way to millionaires if we hadn't spent up in those places we loved but we'd not be so rich in memories.
I think we talked about it once before - but who remembers Ozzie Wades in Walton ?
.. I hasten to add that it was slightly before my time !! :D My mum & dad used to go there. I went there just once with some family when I was about 19.
Does anyone know when it closed down ?
Also, 'Blair Hall' on Walton rd. I went to a family do there when I was about 16
I used to pass Ossie Wades (where the EFC shop is now) on Walton Lane, all the time on the way to the match. Never went in there though, looked a bit of a dive (mind you, that never stopped me elsewhere) :)
Found this thread by accident and joined site. So many places I had forgot. Even now some of the names are memories just starting to surface.
Local clubs for me: Gladray, Ibo, The old Somali (before it moved to the Casa), Chauffers. As a schoolboy went to the last night of the Peppermint Lounge - kopped off with Kirkby girls and had to walk home in the early hours.
Late 70s (I think) went with people from work to the club down from the Blue Angel (can't remember the name). We were the only people downstairs - booth seats around tiny dance floor - when entertainment arrived - Jr Walker and band! Played 2 tunes looking bored and wanted to go. We made a fuss and he played another. Fuss again and he woke up. After that, two hours of non-stop music and dance as a 'private' session from a 60s legend.
Some good memories there Dave. :)
Wow ! Jr Walker - would have loved to have seen him.
I used to hear about the Peppermint Lounge but by the time I was old enough to go clubbing it had changed it's name to Dinos. Think it was called Gullivers after that.
used to go to the Babalou on Seel st , 68-69-70 Kop A Groove at the Bab, J C Steen, and Derek Dolman were the D J,s also the Victoriana, on Victoria st saw Jimmy Ruffin there, did anyone go to the TWISTED WHEEL IN Manchester, or the CLOCKWORK ORANGE IN Chester, or QUAINTWAYS JAZZ Club in Chester, on a Monday night, Happy Times, Cheers to All:unibrow:
Also just found this thread which got me thinking of days gone by so I googled one of my fave haunts from my student nurse days.....the Cabin Club in Wood street.....opp the old bombed out church....I could not believe it when I found it is still going strong....I have my original member ship card some where..dated April 1976......
Sounds like it is still the same old place it used to be when a review on it said dont wear your good clothes....crikey I remember the floors being so beer soaked if you stood still too long you stuck to the floor.....I can still remember being there the night we passed our finals....standing on the the tables singin 'You'll never walk alone'..........fell out of there many a night and round to a kebab shop on the corner of Bold street..happy happy days
For any newbies finding this page. You can see many pics of old haunts including Gullivers and The Cabin Club (in colour) on these two webpages of mine.

All the best,

Ged,
I've looked at some of your pictures before, but this is the first time I've seen the full extent of what you've collected. Absolutely stunned by the breadth of your collection.
Respect.
Kevin
Thanks Kevin, it just sort of grew a bit. It was only supposed to be about the tenement block I came from. If you click any of the pics it takes you back to the home page and there's many more pages you can click on thereafter of street scenes and buildings and the like. :)
Oh my what a fabulous trip down memory lane......The Cabin Club looks a lot posher than it was in my day:unibrow:
Some of those old pubs down the dock road also make me quite nostalgic...used to hang out in a few as I trained at the David Lewis Northern....Lordy I sound like we did nothing but go out and drink:PDT_Aliboronz_24:d9dnt have the money to partake in too much but it was a cheap night out and quite often the most wonderful company was to be found in those places......
A wonderful collection..well done....it was also so nice to see some Crosby ones near where I grew up.....
I was showing my SAfrican hubby....whose comment was...'you have a lot of pubs in Liverpool...........yeah said I we are a sociable bunch'
I see someone also mentioned Erics earlier....now there was a fun place for an up and coming punk rocker as I was a the time:rolleyes:
Ah yes, those dogs are the same and can be found on quite a few of those pics, as Caldy (the golden retriver and her pup - not pub) belonged to the photographer - Joe Devine who must have worn many a shoe out on his treks around pub land.
I went to Don Millington's School of Dancing on Walton Road and to another dance school on Bold Street to learn Latin American both in the late 50's.
My girl friend dumped me after an unfortunate accident and I started to go to Top Rank dancing at the Rialto Ballroom on Upper Parliament Street.
It was a magical place in memory: very plush with an expensive lighting system. Hal Graham was the band leader. The band played mostly Glen Miller covers. I used to jive and win competitions.
I couldn't afford to have a regular girl so I used to dance just one dance and move on. It was the best time of my life. I was in my early 20's. There were beauty contests sometimes.
There must be thousands of prople with the same memories. I'd love to hear from you. I still dance waltz and quickstep.
My mate didn't get a dance all night. I soon found out that his socks were humming so I told him to take them off, nobody would ever know and I bet he'd get a dance. The end of the night comes, the lights go on and there he is, sat in the corner - alone. After learning he'd still not had a dance, even after removing his socks we were flummexed until I asked him where he'd put his socks. 'Here, in my top pocket' he said.
Talking of the Krazy House, Milos and before that Bradys which used to be Erics, I wonder if anyone remembers a certain DJ from those places that used to throw Opal Fruits and hand them out to people? It was me...i confess.:)
I found this today at work here in Denver which is where I ended up at and if anyone remembers me aka Garfield..please let me know. God I miss home.
I remember you getting the sack through lack of liquid sales as the sweets you were handing out were made to make your mouth water.
Pink Parrot
Planet X
Jodys
Kirklands
The State
They are where I grew up.
How about G-Love at the Mardi and the whole earthbeat thing?
i didn't go to the she club at the time but knew bloke who used to dj there
he used to tell of "cabaret "show or something on a certain day of the week which i thought was just a wind up .but perhaps someone who was a regular may elaborate more .

the plaka was above THE FUNG LOY REETAURANT NOW the shangri la in victoria street .someone must remember the staybehinds at the shandri la ?
THE BEACHCOMER / BABALOU have fond memories remember when double duch was in charts they had a skipping compettion believe it or not
i think i'll start collecting any pictures of 60's70's liverpool clubs .
the GLADRAY this was the first club / drinking place i visited poss 1978 .(once upon a time pubs shut in the afternoons )so in town with a mate we decided to or rather"dare" try the gladray as id seen it open when on the 86 bus to town .it was quite full .i was surprised it was just like a bommed out house with a bar, pool table and sixties formica kitchen type tables .
as i rememder a guy at the entrance let us in free . some people before us had paid .it was quite dark inside.at the bar you paid first through a grill for pint it was then passed through by a barmaid with many homemade tattoos on her arms .later on she came round with a pint glass collecting money .this was a collection for her to do a strip to a record or two from their juke box .
as my mate went to the bar to get a round in a rather tough looking girl
just sat at the table and asked if i wanted to some kind of "business" for ?5.
...... i made my excuses and left
Good grief man, I'd just about managed to rub Pink Parrot out of my memory :unibrow:
It became Red Zone for a couple of years (99/00) with techno night Voodoo... currently looking decidedly derelict.
I think there was a Planet X reunion recently at, er, Le Bateau (?)
The shanghai,,,,LOL
Hah! The Pink Parrot
Yeah the Planet-X had a reunion at Le Bateau in May and are planning more, see: http://www.myspace.com/planetx25threunion
I can't believe the stuff this thread is making me remember. The Parrot was always the start of our night. We'd always get ready at my flat and go from the Parrot to Planet X, then Jodys. I seem to remember that the dykes always played pool beneath the gents, and it leaked....a lot...
Snappys? Does anyone remember that?
My misspent youth
Just thought id throw my 2ps worth in.
I used to work on the door at the Pink Parrot (i was the one with red hair). In my time ive fell out of places like the State(mid 80s),Planet X (the original),didnt like it much after it closed/moved, although anyone else remember the Beach *******s last-night party?,Macmillians(off Bold st), Freewheelers/Nightriders,Wilsons, also drank in pubs like the Lisbon, the Newington, The Beehive, Rigbys, the White Star, and also as a last resort on a sunday was the Harrington....
and Snappys on sundays,(one of the only places that saw me dance).. now there was a cool place..
Lordy this thread is bringing back memories! I spent most of my giro during the 80's in the Planet, State, Macs.... where I one spent a very drunken night after seeing Gary Glitter at the Royal Court entirely resplendent in purple spandex (me that is), and got off with a much younger man in a chicken suit.
When not in spandex I often went out in the kind of outfits Christina Aguelliera would find too embarrassing to wear, with the biggest spiky hair in Chrisondom.
Ahh, happy days.
:)erm ello, would someone please reply so i know im in ! im 44yrs (well 45 next week) and i havent got a clue what a 'thread' is. but ive got loads of questions and lots to say about the pool cos its nice to be reminded that some of the things i seen back in the late 70s early 80s actually happened or did i dream them. i left in 85 and now in oz since 2000. god i miss the humour. thanks.
Here's your reply Chris. A thread is just a name given to a topic. If you've got any questions on a certain subject, check first by using the search link to see if the subject has already been covered or not as your answer might already be on this forum. If not create a new thread and ask away, they're very informative on here. Any old pics you've got, no matter how insignificant they may seem to you, post them up using the manage attachments device.
All the best,
Ged.
yo ged, (sorry couldnt resist the yo) this is all very new to me but how do i start a thread ? promise once i get goin, the stupid questions will cease. cheers.
Choose the main catagory where you want to post - ie, say for instance, 'Music' 'Liverpool remembered' or 'chit chat' .. then up near the top of the page (on the left) you will see 'new topic'. Just click on that and then you type in a title for a new thread. You then add what you want to say in the main box and then submit your post.
I recall having to take my then girlfriend to the She club so she could see Bernie Flint singing, think he know as the the singing milkman!
Then it was round the corner to Stanley Street and into The Otherplace had some great times in that club..
