On the completed Beetham Tower what is this little house looking building for?

I remember reading about this when it was in the planning stage. I can't remember the reason but rhese cottages were of historic interest.
They are described as the Canal Cottages. Part of these buildings were/ are approximately 200 years old and were originally used as coal merchant's offices. They stood on the side of Clarkes Basin, which, at the turn of the eighteenth century, was a terminus of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The buildings were last used as laboratories in connection with the old St Paul's Eye Hospital which was demolished to make way for a surface car park which later became the Beetham Tower.

Didn't realise the historical significance of the building, but I'm glad it's been kept. I was wondering about it last time I walked along Old Hall Street, so that's another mystery cleared up!
