The Liverpool facing Ford Cemetery entrance has now been demolished. Another big pub gone. The Hen & Chickens in Melling just on the outskirts of Kirkby - closed down - that one was a shock. Still some big ones boarded up such as The Coronation on Aintree Road and The Cabbage Hall. The Coronation in Childwall was demolished last year too.
The Plough, Rice Lane, Walton has been tinned up for a while, but was sold prior to its auction date in April. For what?
Just sorting through some of my old photo albums and came across this postcard! probably one I got on one of the trips back home. Pubs are as I remember them , especially the 'Philly' very handy for me as I worked at the Radium Institute on the opposite corner of Hope Street! and one still remaining I believe.

Anybody remember the name of the pub near the Clock pub in Great Richmond St,I would have checked Geds site but the tic has turned into 2 days now
Do you mean the Soho Arms Joe?
Both frequented by bakery workers of Lunts and Scotts
The Merton Inn, Bootle.
Looking good since it had a makeover.

Just realised today,in spite of this being my nearest pub, I haven`t got this on my pub set of pics
Looks vaguely familiar...did this have a different name,at one time?
No it` s always been the Windmill, it hasn`t always had the same colour scheme. The manager is an Evertonian I believe
The Bakery on Rice Lane which was previously a warehouse.

It was once a Sykes (Scotts)bakery shop, the hoist doors is where the flour went in,hence the name.
There were many bakery shops like this in Liverpool. The hoist doors are still there in some places

Thanks for the pics Joe! I remember them both very well! Lived in Highbank Drive in the early 50s. The 'Pally' was my nearest pub. and my wife's aunt lived in Wood St.!:PDT_Aliboronz_24:Cheers.
The Plough on Rice Lane, the big one by the old zoo entrance and Dunlops is now tinned up.
Noticed some work on the "Dominion" is being done! There was live music being played from somewhere inside,so possibly it's being converted into a rehearsal studio? I also noticed that someone has a nice new pair of green pants!:unibrow:
If I were stood that high up there for so long, I'm afraid my pants would have to be brown Steve.

Yeah, and the strippers had nothing to do with it of course
The Dominion Pub..?
Had a decent pool team with a few dockers in..
played in the Thursday night Sefton league...
captained by mate Lenny, a docker from the Gerard Crescent Holy Block...
(Not as good as our Pontack pool team of Internationals and pro players from outside Gerard Gardens...)
joined the Thursday League at the bottom...won every division from bottom to top at the first attempt.. then jibbed it...
same as the Dingle Monday...one season in it ... wont it by over 20 points... jibbed it...too easy...
The Pontack pool team ?... stuff of legend....
Professional snooker players coming in on the hustle.. going home with their arse smacked and no money...
Whos' the daddy..? ..... ha haaaaaa..
.
Ha ha - great stuff, you showed em' eh?
The Eureka up here was an eating house then a lad from Kirkby got it and put a pool table in, it had a pool table for 1 year only, we joined the league and won at a canter then he left and it went back to an eating house. Must be a record of some kind ha ha. One of our lads ended up winning the West Lancs individuals too, some of the other teams players were no slouchers by any means as most were snooker players saying pool is easy. They got their come uppance though.
I'd still show them today Ged, still got my cue and it comes out now and again..
last game was a play off to decide who wins the league...
I beat the lad..a good mate of mine..but the commitee took the league off our team..
apparently they hated our team and found some daft excuse to take the league off us..
I packed in after that,,,,I haven't played for years now or picked a cue up for years ,
give me an hour on my own knocking balls about and I'd give anyone a game...
give me a few days and I'd be back to my England International.. Mereseyside and North West champ several times best..
I qualified for the England national team..I never turned up..so I never actually played
...I was captain of Merseyside though..and Merseyside champ....whooped John Parrott 6-0 in a little exhibition game we put on for the Camden St snooker hall lads....
I was JP's practise mate at the Golden Leisure on Johns table...Table 3...
..practise partner..?...take the balls out of the bag man more like...he was buzzing then and nobody got a look in.....JP won the Junior pot Black....I bought that cue of him that he used to win that tournament...
Great stuff :PDT11[COLOR="Silver"]
Cheers Ged...had many great times playing pool....our little four man team was the best in the country, or as good as any four man team anywhere....we won everything..travelled everywhere...and anybody who knows anything about pool in Liverpool will still tell you stories of them 4 players....and thats over 25 years ago... I was given a free car....a car, for nothing..?...I was sponsored by a firm in Widnes...travelled the country representing that firm, they paid for everything....late night bar bills for hundreds of pounds for me and a mate of mine from Widnes, an England International....we'd do the London pub circuit, waistcoat and bow tie job...play local teams...play the best players for money, take the mickey out of them in front of their mates...beat them and give them their money back when we were leaving the pub..... great times and happy days with some amazing tales and memories I cant even dare to go into on here...
The free car I was given...?
All I had to was sign on for a team in Widnes on a Sunday night..
a brand new 1985 Volkkswagen Jetta... free... barrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgain...ha haaaa..
There's a book in there somnewhere - get it written :)

Another one bites the dust, the Metro for sale as they are converting old buildings to bars?
Used to go there in the late 70s when it was the Masonic to see groups.
---------- Post added at 08:22 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:19 PM ----------
Now 'Yesterdays' bar and cafe, Victoria St, but this space was our would be copping off area when we frequented it when it was Gatsby's in the late 70s. In the early 80s we then actually played there a few times.

Hi I'm new to this site and my family originate from liverpool.. I just wondered if anyone remembered a pub called The Spiral Staircase, My Great Uncle and Great Aunt ran this after the war....anyone??
I cannot find any pics of it on Google or any info on it either..that's how I stumbled across this site. I suppose it doesnt exsist anymore. Any help would be great.
Thanks guys
Ged is the best guy to ask about pubs! Have a look at his site, www.inacityliving.piczo.com
Just missed you, Ged. A mate of mine had the Masonic for a while in the mid 70s. I used to stand in for him when he wanted a night off. It could be a bit dodgy but for some reason the ruffians thought I was a copper and would behave. Don't suppose it would make a difference these days.
hi, thanks for taking the time to respond but the link does not work :-(
Thanks for the website mention Steve. Try this cazzi www.inacityliving.piczo.com but I can tell you now that the Spiral Staircase is not on it. I used to drink in the one in Old Hall Street which may be a modern one on the site of an older one as it was in a 1960s block of shops by the post office I used to go to with the works mail.

Cheers Kevin. Yes you do look a bit like a copper but I don't suppose they tell such crude jokes. Poultry shed indeed.
yes I think that is the place on Old Hall Street. My Uncle was called Geoff Hill...does that ring a bell?
Afraid not Cazzi as I was going there quite some time after your Great Aunt and Uncle had it I think. I assume by 'after the war' you mean they had it in the late 40s or 50s?
