Just echoing everyone else's views that your pictures are great and a truly nostalgic journey for me, as it was this era that I grew up, and seeing these pics truly takes me back. Thanks for giving me your permission to share your fine pics on my site, I am sure they are going to evoke a lot of memories for lots of people.
Many thanks for sharing....
A few more from me. the first two show trams passing under walton sta bridge in april 1955 . Next a ribble bus on a very quiet linacre rd, you can just see the corner of the richmond sausage factory, used to have a big sign with a pig holding a sausage on a fork. last a view looking to william brown st from the old tunnel . I will be walking this again 15 june.
Ribble had some ugly looking buses. They did north Liverpool and Crossville the south, while the Corpy did all of Liverpool and even into Prescot. Did the Corpy go into Crosby? I think Ribble did that.
St Helens busses strangely has a bus that went from Speke, through Netherly, Huyton and St. Helens, and the odd route to Liverpool centre.
Thanks for all your kind comments, I'm just glad to share - they could so easily been binned and thus unseen forever!
It was amazing what you could do pre HSE days, hence some unique situations - and sometimes I had a camera!
On the Bidston to Wrexham line;
Heswall Hills, Neston North and Hawarden Bridge stations, April 1970
North Mersey yard, Loco water column, Februry 1971
A fine pair of L&Y water columns, Wigan Wallgate, October 1970
Who bothered to record mundane items like the above, when there were trains to "cop". But its all gone now!
Some more of the last steam on the docks, the privately owned tank engine at Waterloo goods and crossing the Dock Road, July 1971
There are some interesting backgrounds.
I'm not far from the old saus works. will see if I can get a pic from roughly the same place to see how much it's changed
thanks for those of Waterloo Goods. I'm still hopeful of seeing earlier pics of the place, but the ones you've put up have been great to see. :PDT11
Sirob,Quincy,Knowhowe & Merseywail- You all should get together and put a few books together.
Your pics are rare, unseen or just plain brilliant.
And if ya do and make a few quid, don't forget me:PDT_Piratz_26:
Thanx again for sharing them.:PDT11
one thing baffles me about that Ribble pic. if that's the sausage works then the bus is going the wrong way for it to be Linacre Rd. if it was Linacre the bus would be city bound surely?
I think it's maybe Bridge Rd? The road to the right that the saus works is on would be Linacre Rd. Behind the bus would lead up to the Red Lion pub and the old lift bridge over the canal.
unless someone who knows the bus route from back then can confirm which way the bus went.
just found a pic online showing the saus works from Linacre Rd. works on the right so the Ribble pic is Bridge Rd.

know where to take pic from now.
OOPS! You are quite right . looking at a map the bus is on bridge rd heading for netherton . This must be after the opening of princess way, it would have turned up past the lift bridge before then. The caption on the back of the photo says linacre rd. must remember to double check next time

there are a lot of double deckers on the 55B so I thought I'd wait for it so it was closer to original photo, time I was there single decker turned up...typical. the 55A is only peak time anyway.
thank you all you cracker people who have participated in the unseen liverpool photos.
The Poplar St. photo is interesting to me as I am currently working on a family in our tree who married a girl out of Poplar Street many years ago. The two parents are now dead but their children fill the streets. (well it was a large family) and that photo will have some happy memories for some of those kids.
Permission to print it for them Sirob. Thanks.
:PDT_Piratz_26:Fine pics again
A few trams pics. first is alongside seaforth & litherland sta . Next is litherland depot in may 1950, now the site of sommerfield. Third, Norris Green, feb 1955. with the CLC bridge behind, is this near broadway shops? Last, walton vale, no date or photographers details.
The Walton Vale pic I instantly recognised by the building on the left. It's still there today,a jewellers I think.
The Broadway picture is really good.I used to play around there as kid.The shops would be to the right.
Thanks for those who are sharing their super pics. I enjoy seeing some of my past haunts.
Glad that Chippie liked Poplar Street, it was only a chance shot! Copy it with pleasure, that's what the forum is for.
Alexandra Dock Goods station on 6 th October, 1970. The level crossing was being re-laid in a wider curve, to allow modern traffic to the new Seaforth terminal.
On 26 th June 1971, the Queen opened the 2nd Mersey Tunnel. Her exit point from the Royal train at Lime Street and Her leaving the station.
Sirob...you view of Everton Valley from a few pages back is amazing! The amount of time's I've been through that junction, not realising what it was like 30 years previously is unbelievable!
This is practically the same view today...

Keep up the good work.......if that is the right phrasing!
the wasteland where the original pic was taken is now the all weather football pitches.
quite a lot gone from that original shot
In spring, 1970 I visited Woodhams scrapyard at Barry, South wales. Since 1965, the firm had bought British Railways steam engines, but found it more profitable to break up wagons. There was over 200 mouldering away, amongst them a "Jinty" from Edge Hill. Does anyone remember it in happier times?
Looking North over the Odeon, August 1970
The Botanic, Edge hill, March 1976
the Landing Stage replacement, March 1977
Fantastic as ever!
When you look at the style of the Botanic in it's prime, you realise what an utter crime it was to knock it down. :PDT_Xtremez_12:
Sirob i think you should really look to local book publishers, your photographs are a real goldmine that should be shared with the wider public, & make yourself a few bob. I have been collecting prints & cards for 20 years now & have never seen such superb work! Unfortunately for me about 95% of my collection is of local bus, train or tram, photos so probably of little interest to publishers
Sirob, brill again as ever :handclap:
The third one of your latest batch might not mean anything to most people but it brought back memories for me.
Taken from across the Odeon roof, it shows Gerard Gardens in Aug 1970 with part of the technical college (Now the John Moores) being built behind. This construction was literally 100 metres from our back veranda, so it could be followed and replicated by me with my lego and dinky toys quite easily.
My nans/uncles heights, Mazzini, can also be seen amongst the many up on Netherfield Road.
Thanks again.
Some pics of my local station, Seaforth & Litherland. The first is from 29/8/1955 & shows a overhead train about to depart for Dingle, this view is looking towards Southport. The next is a overhead train again, this time looking to Liverpool. The next two show electric baggage cars, the first a L&Y car, second a LMS one. last is a modernised overhead train
Thanks Merseywail, as I have said before, I don't want them to be lost forever. You are producing some good stuff too! I get a kick out of all the comments, as my reward for sharing.
In the winter of 1968/9, I visited Lostock Hall loco shed, called in at Ormskirk in time to photograph the lifting of the Skelmersdale branch.
At Hall Road, by the beach, the water tap was much in use in 1963
I'm trying to salvage what I can of the negs from the sixties, but a lot are damaged. If there is a reasonable image then I will post it.
Here is a wartime pillbox at Clarke Gardens? March 1971
Track lifting at former passenger platform, Alexandra Dock, February 1971
Divisional civil engineers saloon, leaving Lime Street Station, January 1971
Track relaying at Speke, 1971
Outside the Heath Hotel, Allerton,May 1971(not me!)
Quote: Unfortunately for me about 95% of my collection is of local bus, train or tram, photos so probably of little interest to publishers
There are very many that have an interest in the transport scene from yesteryear, For me, railway photos from the Liverpool area pre 1990´s are fascinating, the 4 main terminals especially!! keep on submitting them please all of them, sometimes the quality of older photos is poor but the atmosphere is huge!
Cheers Tony
Sirob
Boss pictures as usual. That Hillman brought back a few memories. You could open them with a lolly ice stick.:PDT_Xtremez_42:
More b/w railway . A sand covered birkdale palace in 1955, this was on the Southport & Cheshire lines extension rly. a failed attempt to compete with the Exchange to Southport line. next is crown st in 1972, if am correct the tunnel far left led to Edge hill. Brunswick goods is seen in 1973 . The last one says edge hill, but i am sure it is Huskisson goods yard, anyone confirm?
Rare pics, indeed, Merseywail! So sad to see Birkdale Palace abandoned. i only saw it as a bare platform in 1964. The "Jinty" is at Huskisson because in the left background is a box pylon. These straddled the canal and carried the 132Kv line from Clarence Dock Power station. You could hear fizzing from them in wet weather!
Regarding Crown Street, the tunnel on the left was the original bore and was much smaller(for horses). There was a basin cut out of the rock wall in it, which was fed by a seepage of water. Towards Edge Hill(behind Chatsworth St.) the cutting had a series of derelict arches on the left. At the back of one of these was a tunnel. It was about 5 feet high and four feet wide. Hewn out of the living rock, it meandered for about 100 yards, ending in a collapse. Don't know what it was, I was only 14 at the time. Can I still be prosecuted for trespassing on the railway?????????
Quite near Liverpool were a number of collieries. Their engines may have been photographed, but not the surface. Coal mining leaves a fascinating industrial landscape.
Here are the Remains of Pemberton Colliery in 1970
And Ravenhead Colliery, with poor oold "Collins Green" knocked into the engine shed pit! June 1973
Some more;
The Classic cinema, Allerton Road, April 1971
Hall Road, pre prom and Gormley, August 1975
Edge Hill, Victoria Tunnel mouth(The MD&HB loco was en route to Brunswick, to re-gain the dock lines), July 1971
Towards Blacklers, over Lime St. Station roof, June 1970
Top of grid, Edge Hill, (Rathbone Road?) 1959
New turntable testing, Liverpool Central, 1953
Ormskirk station, water columns, January 1970
Brynn station, 1964
This is my set of the Plaza, Allerton(Classic to you) This cinema closed in April 1971 and the site redeveloped. The manager allowed me access to the projection room and the projectionist provided the stage lighting display. You can see heads in the balcony! A unique feature was the fountain in the foyer. Although blurred, I have included a pic of it.
Sirob, was Murphy's War the last picture shown?
The cars are: Ford Escort 2 door, Hillman Hunter, Wolsey 1500 & Austin 1100. I had in my time a Hunter and an 1100.
The final programme at the Classic, Allerton, was; "A Shot in the Dark" starring Peter Sellers and "The Hills Run Red" starring Thomas Hunter?????
I have the press cuttings and adverts from the Echo.
