It seems to me that Scousers suffer from a inferiority complex. There's also been an attitude starting in the Sixties that the Beatles turned their backs on the city, and that sentiment still remains: the only way you can be a "real Scouser" is to still live in the city. Tarbuck and Cilla have been criticized for similarly not living in the city and for not coming back. Ringo's remark was ill advised but on the other hand people should be able to look past it -- it was similar to the smart guy quips the Beatles always made. With his "Liverpool 08" CD he is spreading the word about Liverpool to people who might not know about what Liverpool has to offer.

It's very true. If someone s l a g s (this word was beeped out!) off Liverpool to me, I'm not in the slightest bit bothered. Will it change me? Add or subtract money in my pocket? Not at all. The very people that are truly proud of their city will think nothing of s l a g ging off people who have left the area while dumping their chip paper on the ground. How many of these people have ever done anything for liverpool? Become a helper in a Liverpool hospital? Become a guide for the Cathedral's unpaid? No, they just sit around until someone has a go at Liverpool and it's like they are being personally attacked. Worry something about else for a change, like the cure for cancer or the millions of old folk struggling in the world rather than thinking that everything said about Liverpool is a direct insult.

I wonder how many people have noted the millions that Ringo has given away to charities in the past? :rolleyes:

If I had lots of money, I'd probably move to the Isle of Man. Does that make me the bad guy? Sometimes people do more for Liverpool when living outside of it than the people inside the city.

sorry chris, i've had a big night out and a few drinks and i may not be reading / writing this right but in my own experience which i admit i have grown out of now i find it's not an inferiority complex its a superiority complex, and i know i love the people /family and places i have left behind but you need to leave the place for a while to get things into perspective.

I agree that it helps to leave the place to put things in perspective. On the other hand, I suppose some still in Liverpool would say that people such as you and I, or indeed Ringo or Paul, who no longer live in the city, are out of touch, and that's perhaps a fair comment as well.

Some people need to get a life. In 1964, the Beatles, when interviewed about their all conquering trip to the USA were asked 'How did you find America', John quipped 'We turned left at Greenland'

No-one in the U.S. found this a flippant put down, that they weren't raving about 'their' precious homeland etc etc - do you know what they did instead those people went out and bought millions and millions of their records that gave a Liverpool group another piece of history -the top 5 songs in the U.S. Billboard, never done before or bettered since.

The quip was so obviously tongue in cheek (have you seen his previous interviews, he always plays up to the camera) and yet with a hint of truth and he did go on right afterwards to say he loves Liverpool and in his 08 interview says you can live anywhere but he'll always be from Liverpool. If he hadn't shown up for the opening ceromony it'd have been moaners about him being arrogant and thinking he was too big for it or something and if he really came to just advertise his new single, wouldn't he have 'lied' and said 'oh yeah, Liverpool is great blah blah blah' - some things don't need stating.

As an aside, some little corrections. Ringo wasn't wheeled out of retirement as he tours every few years, Ringo didn't sing When i'm 64 and around 40% of those hits weren't written in the 50s and early 60s. They are also not a roadblock when it comes to celebrating the city's famous - they are a big part of it.

I did not see the interview, I don't like Jonathan Woss. Apparently ringo gave an interview on Steve Wright show on the Friday, which praised Liverpool and 08, I haven't seen one post on that here. So maybe it was the type of questions he was asked?:PDT_Aliboronz_24:

to be honest i understand what ringo meant he when he said he misses nothing about liverpool. when he left the city there was nothing there to keep him, when i left there was nothing to keep me either, no employment,no prospects this was 1979 so off i went to work in the i.o.m for 2 years. after that north wales and i have been here ever since. i do go home now and again to visist my family but i would never go back to live there. i would never **** of the city of my birth though and the people we have the best humour,personality, and i am very proud to say i am a scouser i just wanted to better myself no harm in that. to be honest does liverpool really need him back (i think not) there are plenty of other famous liverpool born people who could promote the city in a much better light. we have one of the best actors in the world i think pete posselwaite (not sure how you spell it) for example. anyway liverpool was on the map before the beatles i dont think he owes it anything and the city owes him nothing, thats just my opinion.

I believe Pete Postlethwaite is from Warrington, born there on February 16, 1946 -- per the Internet Movie Database. I agree though that he's a fine actor, in fact, Steven Spielberg is said to called Pete Postlethwaite "the best actor in the world" (see the page on the actor in Wikipedia).

I'll second that. Pete Postlethwaite is my favourite actor. You're right Chris - he is from Warrington.

So here we go. Front pages of the press and on the National news. I still say that its a load of fuss about nothing .

I watched the Jonathan Ross show and Ringo came across as an arsehole and an uneducated one at that! How much was he paid to attend the opening night of the Capital of Culture? Whatever it was, he was grossly overpaid. He was completely oblivious to the feelings of all the Liverpudlians who stood in the freezing cold to see him perform and what a complete and utter waste of time. I wouldn't go to see him if he was at the end of our street! Gerry Marsden should have been star billing at least he is a great ambassador of Liverpool.

Speaking frankly, whether you like it or not, Gerry is a smaller light than the Beatles. That's no diminishment of his achievement. It's just a fact. Liverpool needed the two remaining Beatles to come back, worldwide the city's most famous sons, to make the City of Culture year what it is.

shytalk i know he has to do an accent for what ever part he is playing, but to me he sounds permantly like a scouser.
anyway not all famous liverpool people have a nice attitude i can name a few i have met. so ringo starr is not the only one. he just went on telly and told it how it is he does,nt miss liverpool, what,s wrong with that. i am sure there is alot of famous people out there who don,t miss where they where born.

Can I add to this ??? Ritchie Starkie came from a very deprived area of Liverpool. He was abandoned as a child and spent a lot of time in hospital. When he did go to school he went to Dingle Vale/ later to become Shorefields Comp.

He left this city when he was 21 >>> For warmer places >>> Jeeze ??? who would blame him ? He had earned the cash. I am not going to go into detail about him or Zak, they both keep in touch with me from time to time.

He came back to launch his new single ( I told him on the phone that It Was Crap).

I don't think he did MY CITY a diservice,, I have listenened to all of his interviews. To me he has been full of praise for Liverpool. Also, I feel that he was manipulated in London, and the full interview was not told !

Thanks for your input, Steven, which is helpful. I also don't think that Ringo has an anti-Liverpool or snobby attitude. He is not known for being against Liverpool. Quite the opposite. Although I do agree that his answer to that question was unfortunate and ill judged.

We really need to be careful here because this overblown reaction to a minor comment really plays into all the stereotypes about scousers beng touchy and defensive. This thread has been more acive than many others put together. A city fully at ease with itself woul take the comments with a shrug and accept them for what they were.

He said he doesnt miss his former home. It doesnt mean he doesnt care about it. He's moved on in life thats all.

On Radio Merseyside this afternoon, Billy Butler played some of the recent interviews where Ringo spoke ok about his visit to L'pool.

I nosed at the Echo last night and it's full of people moaning about everything. Capital of Culture was great but...this was great..but. Why not just accept life as it is for once?

Given that I can't see 1,500 posts about it on the post/echo website I'm not inclined to believe the story.

That version was put out and is the only version, George and Ringo were away at the time, the Beatles were fast dissolving at the time. 'Act Naturally' though (the biggest fool to ever hit the big time) was a cover version, Ringo was into C&W.

During the White Album Ringo left for a while, he was away on holiday in Sardinia and went on a boat where a local man showed him how the Octopus's live and collect shiny things to make their den, he wrote Octopus's Garden during this time. He believed he was the odd one out and the other 3 were very close, I thought it was you 3 said Paul, John and George said similar things and so they all made up but not before Paul has already played the drums on 2 new songs they were working on, Back in the U.S.S.R and Dear Prudence, so when you hear these songs, it is Paul playing the drums.

He also played the drums on his first solo album McCartney (1970), on Band on the run album (recording in Africa - when he was left in the lurch when the drummer and guitarist suddenly left just before flying out) and on McCartney II (1980) He also plays drums on some of his more recent solo albums. He is the only recording artist to have had No.1s as a solo artist, duo, trio, quartet, quintet and as part of a larger group (charity singles)

Ringo was an alcoholic in the late 1970s and went into rehab with his bond girl wife, Barbara Bach, he has been teetotal now for many years.

They did, their families were in Liverpool. They just didn't tell the TV and papers.

Regarding that last reply to Max's, I've pointed out earlier that only about 60% of those songs were written in the early 60s (only a handful of them in the late 50s) They also wrote for other artists including Mary Hopkin, Billy J Kramer, Cilla Black, Peter & Gordon, the Stones and more. Their best albums are post mid 60s.

Oasis and many others have copied them so their hits are still influencing the best of todays bunch.

Anyway, it's not a 'let's bash the Beatles' thread anyway, the original poster likes them, it's about a flippant answer (to some of us), though truthful to him.

Tommy didn't like John Lennon, one of the reasons he left. He died just after John and about 10 people attended the funeral.

Ringo did sing "When I'm 64". Very few were written in the 1950s, if any. Most were written in the 1960s. As the Beatles split in 1969 they had to be.
