Some great pics there steveb. I like ordinary street shots, similar to what Ainscough done, it's not all about the grand and the great. I have over 700 pub shots here http://pic7.piczo.com/inacityliving/?g=41057337 with a 2nd page under construction, also others on industry and flats. Any you can help me on, especially if demolished or now under a change of use would be greatly appreciated.

Some street scenes of rows of shops say in Breck road, Smithdown, the High street etc that i've taken - they change hands or close down and re-open so often that they'll one day mean something to someone and there's some great architecture on even the most mundane looking buildings at first glance - a lot more character than the red brick stuff they throw up in uniform style these days.

1st 2 pics this is derelict land where shops used to be. (we call it the 'field of dreams !!') .. and notice 'Pizza Delight !!' (what a delight it is too !!) 3rd pic is where the Cobblers & Sayers was; the next pic is where Thompsons the wallpaper & paints shop was - it was recently opened as a newsagents but closed after just a couple of months. The last pic is of the block which had grocers and fruitshop.

LLoyds chemist which was Mrs Jonses.
Yes, our mothers would get a weeks shopping on that lane without having to venture any further.
It's a very depressing sight now.
Shame the way they have let Breck road go.
Its always been a bit of a scruffy shopping area but at least the shops were open!
I have a clip of Jukebox Records from when it was on the corner.
I used to buy some of my records there.
When going for trainees it was Addidas Kick from champion sports and go and get a pastie and doughnut from sayers while waiting for either the 17,15 and 14 bus.The weather seemed warmer then too.

The above site is to do with the grot spots and the Futurist, ABC, Scandinavian Hotel, Moss Street bombdies and Jamaica House are all on there as well as many others. Some will be refurbished, some demolished. Thanks to Adman (known to me as someone else ;) on SSC :thumbsup:

How come the boarded up glass windows make a pattern?
What gets me, is that lots of high rise flats in Liverpool have been left deralict for some time, yet along comes a developer, tarts the place up, renames them with 'Penthouse' in the title and they sell for hundreds of thousands.
You can bet your bottom dollar that this will happen to this building and the people that once hated it will start liking it again!

"It's being prepared to be covered with large banners. Last time the banners came off in the wind so they're using metal poles to secure them this time."

SEVEN more city centre eyesores are to be hidden by artwork during Capital of Culture year.
They include notorious grotspots Cooper’s Emporium pub in The Strand, and Aladdin’s Palace in Lime Street.
Two of the ECHO’s Stop The Rot campaign targets, the Scandinavia hotel and the White House, will be hidden behind hoardings.
The bland QPark car park, part of the £1bn Liverpool One shopping district, will be draped in a large banner to brighten it up.
The dressing-up work should be done within the next few weeks as part of Look Of The City, a multi-million pound project to brighten up Liverpool before tourists start arriving for 2008.
City officials feared rundown locations still untouched by regeneration efforts would make a bad impression on visitors.
The new list of seven buildings is added to a list containing what is widely regarded as Liverpool’s biggest eyesore Lime Street’s Concourse House, which should be covered up within days.
Other buildings due to be hidden are derelict shops behind Marks and Spencer in Williamson Square, and Kingham House in Berry Street.
Those picked are all at prominent locations likely to be visited by tourists. Cooper’s Emporium, for example, is opposite the Three Graces.
Most of the designs are those revealed by the ECHO in September and are supposed to reflect music, art, maritime heritage, creativity, people and sport.
Aladdin’s Palace will feature lines from the Liverpool Saga, a poem started by Roger McGough and continued by the people of Liverpool.
Kingham House will reflect its Chinatown location with Chinese artwork.
A piece of graffiti drawn by famous artist Banksy on the White House pub will be preserved.

Are tourists really going to get a good impression of Liverpool with loads of buildings covered with hoardings or banners?
Now that the ABC/Forum cinema in Lime Street has been cleaned (with painted boarded-up windows), I do hope they're not going to cover it up with another banner.
The Scandinavian Hotel (which was never a hotel) only needs the windows to get the same treatment as the cinema to make it look good.
It's got a new roof and has been painted.
Kingham Knight building in Berry Street is a rare example of an Arts & Crafts design, and certainly shouldn't be covered up.
One of the grotspots not mentioned is the former Las Vegas in Skelhorne Street which has already closed down since becoming Liverpool's tattiest pub!
When I went to Rome they done that "cover up" and it looked fantastic.They should of done it to most of the city to be honest .

The ones that are due to be knocked down, like Concourse Tower - what are they waiting for? Give me a bulldozer and I'll do it for cheap :D
As for QPark - what's going on there - it's a brand new building yet they already need to brighten it up with a banner. If there's that much of a problem with the design, why did it get built?

PRESSURE is being piled on the multi-millionaire owner of Liverpool’s three worst grot spots to tidy them up.

Cllr BerniTurner, executive member for the environment, who also represents Old Swan, said: “The carpet store is in an appalling state and I believe it amounts to systematic destruction.
“Residents in Old Swan have to put up with these eyesores every day and they attract gangs of young people.”
Cllr Paul Clein said: “It is outrageous that a series of sites along a main route can be left in this state.
“It is an important year for Liverpool and hundreds of thousands of people will come into the city centre along Edge Lane.
“If the current law does not allow us to do something, we should say something loud and clear to the government.”
Councillors also asked if the sites could be boarded up with artwork, in the same way as derelict houses at the west end of Edge Lane.
But the council’s regeneration director John Kelly said that would be very difficult.
He said: “We would have to erect the hoardings incredibly high and, to make it safe, go back from the pavement into Mr Gubay’s land.”
The three Edge Lane sites topped a list of the city’s official top 100 eyesores in 2005.

Just looked thru some of the photos way back in this thread, i'm amazed how every building seems to have roller shutters not just on its doors but on its windows, is this citywide or just in certain areas, it looks terrible to me, makes the places look like prisons

I don't know if anyone read it in the paper a couple of days ago, but the owner of the land seems to be getting made out to be some sort of evil man who doesn't care, this couldn't be further from the truth. He is a highly successful businessman who has major redevelopment plans for edge lane retail park, but the council dismissed them as being too ambitious. Only LCC could dismiss something as being 'too ambitious'.
He has now offered to plug the £20m shortfall in COC funding as long as the council give him planning permission to redevelop the sites. I think it would be in the councils best interests to accept his offer.
I think he is leaving the sites as they are because this is his only bargaining tool to get the go-ahead for his plans. If he demolished the buildings and tidied the sites up, the council would have won and he would find it even harder to get his plans approved.
If anyone is to blame for the state of the sites it's the council, not Albert Gubay. His plans look and sound fantastic but for some reason beyond my comprehension the council won't approve them.:rolleyes:
The entrance to the ABC Cinema Lime Street and The Whitehouse pub Berry Street, have wooden frames around them. This means hoardings/artwork will be erected soon.
I agree shutters make the place look depressing and in reality they don't stop thieves getting in, they just go in via the roof, taking off a few tiles etc. I seem to recall the Liverpool Chief Police Constable stating that these shutters reminded him of Beirut on a bad day. They could do with some kind of banners / paint job on the back of the Municipal buildings... there used to be an annexe in this spot but it was bombed in the war... in my opinion they should turn it into a park, retaining the car park underground if needs be.
