St James' Mount shown on the 1848 os map [LRO] attached. The 'well' can be seen just left of the Huskisson Memorial. It was stone quarry at first, but in "1767, in order to provide work for an unusually large number of unemployed, the Corporation of Liverpool laid out the western side of the site as an ornamental garden known as the Mount or Mount Gardens" [quoted from LRO online cat. 352 CEM/3]
Stone supplies to rest of the quarry were exhausted by 1825, and a decision was made to turn it into a privately run cemetery - which offered an alternative to the now overcrowded church cemeteries. The cemetery was consecrated on 13th Jan 1829. It was still some years before the big municipal cemeteries like Toxeth Park opened.

Excellent photograph, Joe. You've really captured the place and brought back some memories for me.
Keep up the good work.

Don't remember when I took this. I like the way the red life thingy stands out. I could sharpen it as it was early morning mist I think but I do not alter my pics at all, I want them to be the colours I saw. Same with my beach pics. For me I like my pics natural.

Same for me regarding touching up pics Roni though some do suit it. That is now a view no more by the way - thanks to those gross black granite bland apartments going up.
That was a lovely picture Ronnie.. What gross black granite bland apartments Ged????
Oh no. Sorry to hear this view has gone. I took a few pics there that day. I loved the lamp post and that whole 'look' I took quite a few pics of Matthew Street and the Grapes that week too. The fireplace inside the Grapes also. Good memories for me
Yes, some photos do suit it but I want to remember what I actually saw and how it was. For me the mist and greyness was part of it

Waiting for a lift!
ha,ha, very good. what on earth are they doing ??
Thanks for this pic, Ronijayne. The photograph on the Seven Streets blog shows the rather, to my mind, shocking transformation of the same scene... and the title of the blog entry "Total Eclipse of the Heart - Mann Island" editorializing on the change of scene says it. UGH!!!!'

I sat on that bench waiting for my cousin to meet me. It was lovely and I am so sorry to hear it is no longer. It was early morning if I remember correctly and so peaceful I enjoyed the wait, I am usually very impatient!
