IT has been described as one of the jewels in our crown, but how it should present itself to the people of Merseyside ? and visitors from around the world ? has often been a matter of great debate.
The stunning Albert Dock, the architectural gem that was famously born again, has always deserved the best . . . it?s just that people can?t always agree on what the best is for this historic collection of buildings.
And now one of the dock?s main players, Jerry Goldman, managing director of The Beatles Story and director of the Yellow Duckmarine and Big Yellow Boat cruises, is calling for a new discussion about the future direction of the landmark venue.
Mr Goldman highlights London?s Covent Garden area as being a tourist destination which, he says, unlike Albert Dock, makes the most of itself.
He explains: ?Albert Dock has bigger potential than Covent Garden. This is a glorious space. Covent Garden has got historic market buildings ? full stop. It hasn?t got a river, dockside and it hasn?t got any open green spaces.
?But what they have created at Covent Garden is possibly the number one must-see attraction in London ? everyone goes there, whether they are locals or tourists.?
He adds: ?Albert Dock, physically, has far more to offer. But in Covent Garden the organisations and businesses involved have combined and organised themselves to make the area as super-attractive as possible to bring people in.
?Regarding the Albert Dock, I think it needs council leader Warren Bradley to bring all the parties around the table.
?If the council can work with people to build the ECHO arena and Liverpool One then it should also develop our existing treasures, such as the docks, to their full potential.?
He adds: ?The dock is no longer a prime and lively destination but it CAN become one again ? it can be turned into a place where people can come to be entertained, to have fun and spend a lot of time with their families.
?But there needs to be the will to turn Albert Dock and Kings Dock into a lively destination ? and not just when there?s a concert on at the ECHO arena. For it to happen, though, you need the political will.
?Albert Dock could, for example, have an indoor market ? at least, initially, at weekends. There could, say, be a food market on Saturdays and an arts and craft market on Sundays.
?And LIPA students could come and perform in different performance areas around the dock.

Putting large buildings that only attracts a large volume of people at irregular interval is folly. You need a constant 365 attractive vibrant district. Large arenas area mistake. There are better places for these, not littering the dock waterscapes.
I've always thought the management of the Albert dock,to be more than a bit half-hearted,as in, sit on our jacksies,and they will come! (Anyway)
The city centre needs merging with the Dock R, urban motorway, by eliminating the Dock Rd at that point. If the Kings Dock branch docks had been left and modern buildings of the Albert Dock formula were built around the quays, then the whole area would have been vibrant.Quote:

The Albert Dock is a lovely building, but it's a place I never go to. There just aint anything to drag me in there.
The restaurant on the side opposite the museum that lets kids "build their own pizza" by bringing the raw ingredients to the table was a cute idea - but their menu also had adult stuff on it too. My sisters grandkids really liked it after a trip to "Bug World".Quote:

The block building to the left is totally nondescript. How that was given planning permission I do not know. Better high rises have been pulled down Liverpool than that.

Across the Canning half tide dock
The Wedges are looking better than I expected. The mix of architecture is very interesting. The museum, Wedges, three classical buildings, an Art deco building and Alex Tower with a slanted roof. All around docks, waterfront and a canal.

This Sunday 11th July sees the start of the annual "Nobby"race in the Mersey
It`s at least a couple of years since I last visited Albert Dock, and at that time I found the `parking` to be pretty inadequate. Also the parking which was available was operated by `gangsters`. [How many people were/are aware of that ?] Anyway, the `Mad Planners` have now in my opinion completely destroyed or eradicated the old and fascinating `character` of the area, particularly around the pier head. The entire area has been turned into a sterile and soul less modern monstrosity completely lacking in `atmosphere`. As for the Albert Dock itself, it was a far more interesting place in the 40`s and 50`s when it was [along with Salthouse and Canning] crammed full of coasters and the like.Quote:

I agree with that, it is also too expensive to park there, £2 an hour, a day out there would cost around £16 pounds to do and see everything. at one time the parking was for free. I do not go there anymore. I was going to take the granchildren around there, too expensive. That Liverpool One parking is £2 and hour, what a rip off, 4 hours shopping £8. The Trafford Centre inear Manchester the parking is free. it is also a better place. Liverpool obviously does not want a tourist trade. When I went to the Merchant Navy Service at St Nicholas Church by the Pier Head I parked at the Eldonian Club and walked to the Church in 20 minutes, and got a taxi back, £3, cheaper than £8 parking fee.

The multi-storey car park the far side of the echo arena is cheaper and u get to walk past the arena, wheel and the dock on the way to Liverpool one :)
