The Vernon's steam clean on sunday as mentioned earlier - imageshack not working so thumbnail only using manage attachments on here.

A LEGENDARY pub which once hosted infamous after-hours council meetings will soon reopen.

Dale Street?s Vernon Arms closed in 2004 and fell derelict.

New landlord Jimmy Monaghan now hopes he and his family can breathe life into the much-missed boozer.

In its mid-1980s heyday, it was dubbed Liverpool?s ?politburo?.

Militant Tendency stalwart Derek Hatton frequented the watering hole before going to meetings in the municipal buildings and annexe on the other side of Dale Street.

He told the ECHO: ?More decisions were taken there than were ever taken in the chamber.

?I have got wonderful memories of the place. You met before meetings and after meetings.

?They used to have ?stay behinds?, when they locked the doors and people would finish their drinks.

?You had more problem getting out then in.? more

I heard on the Grapevine only this week that the Merton was going to become a Wetherspoon pub. To be honest, I found this a little hard to believe.

Perhaps J.D. Wetherspoon are going to build a new pub on the site?

Seems to be unusual timing though if they are - considering the recession and all that...

I go past there every day on the bus...its been derelict for some time!

I have to say it is good to see this thread includes the rest of the Merseyside area...we have such a diverse range of public houses around the banks of the Mersey...most of them are still open. Lets hope they continue to do so for a while!

When this first opened after renovation in 1979/80 it was Rockfords night club and Earl St. Johns but it wasn't always like that - oh no. Back when Dr Duncans (now Pogue Mahone) was in Seel Street - his birthplace - a likely lad from the Swan area used to idle down to work then get down to idle when we were renovating this place.

In the meantime, my mate Chris and I painted this ceiling.

Hanging precariously from a scaffolding with no harnesses or rails, we'd lean out as far as we could get before dragging it around the room (they couldn't afford one with wheels you see)

Then we'd have to dismantle the top layer to get under these very ornamental mosaic arches (which we also buffed up)

The Winchester on Townsend Lane, Anfield has been closed for ages.
There will be no local pubs left in Liverpool at this rate !

Having carried out a comprehensive photographing of every pub in Liverpool including Huyton, kirkby and Sefton over the last couple of years. It is true that many were already empty or derelict and since then some more have closed and some have even re-opened. I think the trend now amongst the biggest age range of drinkers is to drink cheaply at home until 11pm then hit the town where more new pubs have opened up in the last 5 years than at any one time since Victorian times. The corner local is becoming a relic of the past.

I'd agree with that. Even when I was at Uni, I'd "pre-load" (lovely term) at home before going into town around midnight. The habit has continued to this day whereby we'd have a bottle before getting a cab straight into town. I only go to the local to watch the match these days.

Nice photos of Dr Duncans Ged! Shows the side room up very well. Anyone who has not been there will get a good idea from these photos, Well Done!

I was passing here today so I called in the Iron Horse on the corner of Sandhills Lane for a pint . I asked the what they were doing to the Atlantic
she told me they were painting it,I was surprised to find out it is run by the same manager as the Iron Horse.It is only opened at the weekends or for functions. Although I came from this area I have never been inside the Atlantic the barmaid kindly opened it up to show me all the old photos ,musical intruments and posters which adorn the walls these are just some of the pics I took

I used to go in here on a sunday, last year to see the groups including Phil Jones aka two's a crowd aka afraid of mice. The Iron Horse next door also has groups on. I remember Billy and Wally programmes coming from here too.

Hi folks not sure if anyone can help me with this? But any info would be helpful, This pub was ran by my relies back in the 1800's, from around 1850 to 1871 I last found it on the 1891 census still listed as a pub but with a different family at the helm. Can anyone tell me anything about its history or perhaps someone may have an old pic of the pub. This site was a great find and you all seem such nice people, hope to visit often.:)

Hiya marymint. I have a list of the pubs that existed on that side of the road which will have been the stretch from Leeds Street to Sherwood Street. Do you know which street it was on the corner of (if any)

There was a WSV - Wine and spirit vaults on the corner of Maddrell Street (formerly Slate St) in the 1800s which became the British Queen Vaults later on.
In 1908 the manager was James Hamilton.

Could this be the one as the only others seem to be the Trafalgar Arms (formerly the Freemasons Arms pre 1800s) - this was on the corner of Upper William St.

Nearer town was Dodd Vaults on the corner of Sprainger Street named after the manager Thomas Dodd. In the 1980s it became O'Gorman's bar. This actually was also a SV pre 1870s. A photo of this is on my site below.

Hiya Ged, thanks for the quick reply. I can give you some more info which I got from the census. Here goes in 1861 my man Hugh Ryan was listed as the publican at 110 Gt Howard Street "Spirit Vaults". This is the first entry on the page and a big family living there. The next on the page is what looks like Sprainger St and Whitley Street. On the 1871 census it begins with 108 Gt Howard St, then 110 Gt Howard St a William Connolly being the publican now married to Hugh Ryans neice Rose. The adresses below are what looks like Gt Howard Court? and then Princes Walk?. 1881 has William Connolly as the publican again top of the page is 108 Gt Howard St, then 110 the address of William followed by Gt Howard Court no 2 and then princes walk again. From the A - Z it looks like it is the somewhere between Howards Court? and Sprainger St, what do you think? I suppose it also depends on which way the enumerator ( the census counting guy ) decided to walk!!

Ah right. Just had a look in my 1908 Edwardian A-Z/Street directory and Dodds Vaults was No.80 so forget that.

110 (not listed - sods law) would have been on the block from Whitley st to Upper William Street.

108 on the corner of Gt Howard st and Princes Walk was M. McCarthy - Chandler and on the opposite corner, No.112 was Nabb & Co. Bakers and flour dealers.

Incidentally the Tam O'Shanter public house was at No.96 and the Shamrock Vaults at No.140(not listed in Freddy O'Connors pub on every corner book)

Sorry but that little investigation has drawn a blank.
