I'd say that of all of the ones i've photographed over 2006/7 - and it's all the pubs still left in Liverpool, those that are closed were so before the smoking ban - look at the whitefield, peel, vernon, united powers, phythian etc.
I don't think hardened smokers will be put off standing under or in the makeshift covers that a lot of erected or even standing outside, in fact many have said it's started getting people talking to strangers again as they all huddle like the underdog/outcasts with a common cause that they've somehow been labelled with one swoop of a government law.
I'd say the drinking at home with cheap supermarket beer is a definite factor in some closing though. It seems that all newly opening bars is now restricted to the city centre instead of corner locals.
I'd also say that the rot started for some as early as the 1980s when densely populated tenement communities were shipped out with only a quarter of that mass remaining in the new build houses. I'm thinking of some like the Wedding house, Prince Alfred on Everton Brow, Lamplighter, tugboat, Seven Stars, Great Eastern, Falklands, Prince of Wales, Legs of Man, The Swan, Hare and Hounds, Peppers, The Pontack, Courthouse, Denbigh Castle, Andy caps, New York and Soho Arms - all closed prior to the smoking ban and what a depressing list around my old area just off the top of my head.
Scottie road lost around 70 of its pubs between Addison st and Silvester st just because of the Kingsway tunnel.

The best BLUES pubs in the city.
bluekipper.com - Everton Top Toffee Ale 'ouses 2001/2007
The Wharf gets my vote and that's where I go for the away games and that's where I was yesterday.
I was in the Crown on Lime St on Friday afternoon - Harrison Line reunion. Quite a coincidence as I had a pint in there the night before I joined Harrison's in 1973. Totally remodelled inside.
Amazed at the prices - Liverpool really is the capital of cheap beer. Unsurprisingly, the place was packed.
Kevin ,have they covered up the marvellous platerwork on the ceilings? It should be listed, skilled plasterers did the work many moons ago and they were forbidden to smoke whilst working. When the gaffer came around they used to shove their cigar butts in to the plaster. If you can still the ceiling ,you will spot the cigar butts because, they have gradually reappeared over the decades, look like little thumbs sticking out of the surface.
Sorry - if I'd stayed there much longer I'd have been in a good position to view the ceiling, but these days I know when to go home!
The ceiling was still on view when I was in there in the summer, a nice little haven upstairs in there as well. Check out the ceiling in Dr Duncans too which I help repair and paint back in 1979, very intricate detail.
LIVERPOOL?S pub scene is officially beating the credit crunch.
New figures show there are now more drinking establishments in the city than 12 months ago, bucking the national trend.
During 2008, 12 Liverpool venues closed ? but another 15 opened, meaning there are currently 948 pubs and bars in the city.
Across the country, the pub trade is suffering a slump, with around 36 licensed premises shutting every week.
It means the number of closures have gone up by more than one-third since December last year, rising from 27 a week in 2007.
But figures compiled by industry analysts CGA Strategy show Liverpool appears to be bucking the trend.
Across England, only 403 new pubs opened in 2008, while 1,803 closed.
Pro-pub campaigners claim the smoking ban and supermarkets selling cheap booze below cost have had a devastating effect.
Chancellor Alastair Darling has admitted the smoking ban was responsible for many pubs going out of business.
But Fiona Watkin, landlady of Thomas Rigby?s, in Dale Street, said the number of tourists brought into the city by Capital of Culture helped boost Liverpool?s pub scene.
She said the smoking ban was just one aspect of the problem facing many pubs.
She added: ?The VAT cut was one thing, but then they put up the duty on alcohol.
?We have had four cost price increases since January and we have only put up our prices twice, so we are absorbing the cost.
?The smoking ban has not affected us really because we have a beer garden.?
Campaigners claim traditional community pubs are suffering the most.

Liverpool pubs to cut cost of a pint to less than ?1
Jan 2 2009
by Richard Down, Liverpool Daily Post
THE cost of a pint will be slashed to less than ?1 in eight Liverpool pubs this week in a bid to offset the credit crunch for customers.
The new pricing will kick in on Monday at Wetherspoon pubs, and will run indefinitely in a move that is sure to raise concerns about cheap alcohol among the region?s health organisations.
A pint of Greene King IPA will cost 99p, a bottle of San Miguel 99p, a bottle of Blossom Hill Ros? ?4.99, a single measure of Sailor Jerry rum and mixer for ?1.29 and a bottle of Jacques cider 750ml for ?3.99.
The announcement comes on the back of a torrid year for pubs.
Liverpool bucked the trend with a net gain of three pubs and bars, but city brewer Cains endured a turbulent time after incurring debts in the region of ?50m.
Last night Lyndsay Waldron, manager of The Raven, in Walton Vale ? one of the locals cutting prices ? said: ?I appreciate that the economic downturn means that punters now have to be more careful with their money.
?I believe the new drink prices will allow people to enjoy a visit to the pub without it costing them too much.
?Unlike most sales that start in January, though, the pub?s offers will not be ending within days, but will run indefinitely.?
The other seven city pubs which are to reduce their prices are Thomas Frost, in Walton Road; The Welkin, in Whitechapel; The Richard John Blackler, in Great Charlotte Street; The Picturedrome, in Kensington; The Lime Kiln, in Fleet Street; The Fall Well, in St John?s Way; and The Navigator, in Queen?s Drive, Stoneycroft.

The Kendal Castle as was. The corner of Fountains Road and Westminster Road.

And the Elm House on the corner of Lampeter Rad,so there are a few pubs left
Hiya Ste. Yes, the Kendal never did get to the delapidated stage that the Easby's at but it was a yo-yo pub as I call them. Swift's is another on Stanley Road, opened and closed 3 times last year, the manager has just moved to the Jollys on Marsh Lane.
The lady who owns the Easby might well have been waiting for a bid from the council since it's the only privately owned property on the whole of that estate that's coming down around it.
The lambeth and the Saddle must be well pleased there is less competition now.
Swifts is on Stanley Road but the Bootle stretch about halfway between Bankhall street and Balliol Road.

If the beer is as good as these pubs look it should be a good pint
Been in them all at one time or another GD but the exact location of the Bear and Staff has me puzzled. They have lasted longer than some Netherley pubs.
The Bear is just a little way up from the Black Bull Paddy, on the opposite side of the road.
By the time I had negotiated Woolton village or the pubs of Netherly. Gatacre could be a bit bleary. As a lad on the corpy we did that round. The kitty might I add made it lucrative, find me Quarry Street :ninja:
Quarry Street contains a number of quaint little hostelrys, a nice area.
Something different;
The Chepstow Castle, County Road, Walton
The Spellow, Goodison Road, Walton
Both last Friday night.
Is Paddy asking about the Quarry St in Woolton Village? or can it be the same??? Hey Paddy! have your first pint at the 'Black Bull', and your last one at 'The Grapes'' and stop for one at each of the pubs you pass on the way!!! Then you'll find Quarry St just around the corner!!! Cheers Mate:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
