Hi Ste,
That is a capped ventilation shaft for the Railway tunnel below. Capped off so you can't be thrown down there as it's a fair drop.

Thanks Quincyg and Nightowl
Just for clarification, it's a vent from the Waterloo Tunnel :PDT11
There are a number of these if you follow the Waterloo tunnel route, notably at Norton Street, in the grounds of Archbishop Blanch school, Crown street,
Mason Street and of course the one pictured (off the top of my head). The others are taller though and so not capped off.
Great pics...quincyg...any chance of posting a bigger version of the front of the goods yard on Wavertree/Tunnel Rd.?
I was brought up about 100 yards from that on Wavertree Rd. Brings back lots of memories.
that's the full size for that sadly. I've got loads of local history books, there's bound to be a pic in one of them. will have a look and scan one in.
my gt grandparents and gtgt grandparents lived around there until about 1915.
Lilac Grove, off Thorburn St/Crosfield Rd off Durning Rd and an uncle lived in Martensen St.
just had a quick shufty and found this one in Liverpool-our city-our heritage.

I'm off out with my camera for a bit so will have another look later. Will rope my hubby in to go through the books as there's so many of them.
been going through my local history books and found this fab pic from the Liverpool Show.
This is in the days when it was really good. the last one I went to in the 90's was rubbish. seemed to be mostly stalls selling clothes.

Good interview with Leonard Rossiter here from 1970. He was brought up in Edge Hill/Wavertree area.

He also lived in speke. It was either Greyhound farm road or Goldfinch farm road.
I was told that Leonard Rossiter was born or lived in the "Railway Inn" on Wellington Road.
BBC link wont work for me! I'll try another time.
