Genealogy-Who is into it?

hi all,
i have been tracing my family tree for a few years now, i have got back to 1600 on my dads side but, cant get any further than myggrandfather on my mums side as he was italian. as much as i have tried i cant get anywhere, and now i dont even know if i have the correct surname for him so without knowing this i cant even begin, but up to now i have found it very interesting, i would love to be able to put faces to the names i have found, or still to go back in time and meet them to see what they are like and how they lived!!

While tracing my husbands family history I found out that his great uncle married into the Codman family.

I can remember seeing a plaque on a house in Farnworth Street Liverpool that had the Codman name on it, does any one else remember this ?? if so what did it say ?

I am also in interested in who else lived in the house around 1950 as Farnworth street is given as the place of residence on a marriage certificate for another relative

any help or advise appreciated

hi, Ive been doing mine since 2006,took me a while to get into it because I was green,now have over 3,200 rellies,they come from everywhere,very proud what I have found,some good some not so good, but what the f*** its still family,I belong to ancestry.com,anyone that wants info let me know and I will have a look for you.;)

I've been doing mine for about a year it is very addictive. I had a head start with a load of info about my Isle Of Man ancestors I didn't really have to do any work on them. I was told we had some Welsh ancestry and I've found a few of them. I've got a Jones that's taking time to sort out. I've found a Scottish mariner born in Greenock, Scotland and some ancestors that go back to the Bolton and Bury area. I didn't think we had any Irish ancestors but it turns out my Dad's Dad's (who doesn't have an Irish sounding surname) family all their ancestors came from Ireland.

Long time no speak. How very true. It costs a bomb to get copies
of all the records. To my mind, by now the BMD records should be
available on-line for free, LRO take note :-)

Interesting thread. Its strange how we all want to go back and find our past histories. My Dad never spoke of his past and did not want us to talk about it (which we now realise was due to the fact his Mum was not married when she had him) and Mum spent some of her childhood in an orphanage. My niece has researched the family tree but we found a fair bit of sad stories; paupers graves, workhouse births, and dead ends, plus interesting stuff like possible roma links; my niece and I laid flowers on graves relating to both sides of the family in Ford cemetery and I have decided to leave it at that. I think perhaps my Dad has cursed any further research. My niece carries on. Its too sad for me though. I will stick with the present!

Yeh, it can be a double-edged sword,not the idealised image that you have, when just looking at a name,job,etc!I found out one of the reasons why my extended family,have never been closer,and probably never will be!

I have been doing my family tree since 2006 I've found out quite a lot!

My Nan on my mother's side who is 95 I did her side of the family first. Her mother's family surname ROGERS had a farm in Barton Upon Irwell in Manchester, 96 acres I believe. I found out that two children died of Scarlet Fever within the family, 2 days apart and were both brothers. I have found their grave as well and must pay a visit. I've gone back to 1785.

Her father surname YOUNG was from Bolton the only reason the family came to Liverpool was because Nan's grandparents moved to Canada as her grandfather was in the Navy. On the return via boat they arrived in Liverpool and never left. Talk about fate!!!

The thing with Nan's tree is she has been married three times, each time her husband sadly passed away. I did my half aunt's tree and found that the cousins where very rich and lived in Freshfields.

Then there is Grandad's family EDWARDS and they are hard to find because of the popular surname so a trip to the records office is in order. But I have found my great grandparents Harriet Ann BURROWS and James Edwards in Toxteth Cemetry and I have visited their grave. Their son William Edwards is also buried with them, he was killed aged 22 in WWII. Harriet and James married in St Nicolas church with her father Joseph Burrows in attendence, her mother Eliza died aged 51. They were from the Lodge Lane area but I think Eliza was originally from Shropshire.

On my Dad's side there is the surname LACY, so I've researched the name and according to the records we may have bee de lacy and came from Wexford and there are links to Normandy, I have gone as far back as my great, great Grandparents and althought my surname isn't that popular now, especially spelt without an E in the name it was quite popular year back so for accuracy a trip to the records office is needed to clarify a few things. Grandad's mother was called Mary Jane Jones, so can't get nothing from that as yet!

Nan's surname was originally FERGUSON which again is a nightmare, but I have worked out her family came from Ireland and not Scotland. I've found where her father Robert lived with his family. Her mother's surname was McIlvaney which I cannot find anything out at all other than the fact it could be associated with gypsies! Don't tell me I've gypsy blood!!! :)

I'm going to start getting back into this now both my girls are at school. :)

Two weeks ago I went for short break in Llanfyllin in Wales !, this is where my GGrandfather John Maurice Jones was born, and his father Henry Jones and possibly his father Henry Jones !!!!.
Llanfyllin does not appear to have changed much the High Street is much the same as when my ancestors lived there in the 1800's, my husband and I looked around the village and the graveyards but could not find any graves that appeared to be my family, but hey looking for Jones in Wales is like looking for sheep.
The local library are really helpful , they have access to Ancestry but could not tell me anything I did not know already !, however they gave me the address of Powys archives who they said may help, yes they will look up records for you "at a cost".....?10 per look up , or ?20 per hour !!!, so if anyone knows anyone who goes to Powys archives let me know please as I have a mystery on my hands.
John Maurices father Henry Jones was a post boy in llanfyllin, and died aged 39 in 1868, the cause of death listed on his death certificate is "accidently deaceased" I am very curious to find out how he died (an inquest was held on the same day as he died 1/2/1868).
Johm Maurice came to live in Toxteth and is on the 1891 census in Liverpool.
I often feel like Sherlock Holmes trying to find out all the clues to peoples lives !.

Im new to the site. and the area (born in Rochdale). I have been doing my family history for 7 year and I have now started on my dads side. He and my aunt were in care most of their childhood and I just want to put my family tree together. I do know that I have uncles in (or used to be in) Liverpool, Delroy and Emanual (Burris) other names that have been mentioned are Marie and Josephine. My fathers name is Vincent and I have an aunt Valerie too, along with Velma who I have never met. I have managed to go back 300+ years on my mums side. It would be nice to finish my book for my daughter (even if it takes me a lifetime). If anybody could help it would be much appreciated (you don't know how much).

I believe some of my ancestors are Russian and Rumanian. I'll have to find out more about it ...Not sure where to look though :question:

Delroy and Emanual are in Liverpool but I'm not sure how you would go about contacting them. The only thing I would suggest is putting an ad in Liverpool Echo 'Where Are They Now' or 'Old Pals' section.
I know of them, but not well enough to know their contact details. I have seen Delroy in L'pool town centre.

I started researching my family as a present for my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary....well and truly hooked now!!!! Now I understand my roots and know some of the hard lives my ancestors had, I appreciate all the more what I have now.

All those ancestory web-sites - I never get anywhere with them. I type in all my various relatives names or dates, or places, and have never yet got a result. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y24...ars/e20301.gif it's like none of us existed ! ha!

First thing you need to do is write down all that you know. Start with your parents and your grandparents. Ask older relatives if they can help or if they have any family stories. Anyone killed in ww1 or ww2 can be found. Then its checking births,Marriages, Census records. If you have common names its hard, but not impossible. My mum was a Johnson. Her mum was Hughes who married a Hughes...Nightmare.

Using a family tree chart ( loads on tinternet for free ) you can fill it in and it gets easier to understand.

Tribal Pages has a very good one for free. Or use Ancestry.com. You dont need to subscribe to build your tree.

Dont expect too much too soon, Patience is the key to this...But when you find them its chuffing grand.

I've tried all the sites listed and never get anywhere. There was a site featured in the Echo the other night, so I tried it. Guess what - 'not found' !!


I've looked in the Mormon sites too.

I'm back to 1811 at the moment with a James Dandy who funnily enough lived on Mason Street in Edge Hill haha.

Have been doing mine since 2001, gradually fitting it all together like a jigsaw.

Have come across a lot of interesting stuff in fact today I have just received an email from Ancestry.com who sent me my certificate of birth. It confirms that I was born at home in Springfield Place( four squares).

It's all taken a lot of time but well worth it ,when I first started some of the info was hard to get hold of but theres so much more information accsesible on the net now.

We got most of our info from the Public Records Office at Central Libary, the staff are very knowledge and helpful.

the furthest I've got with my Liverpool familys is about 1825.......my Suffolk family I'm back to 1663

The Mormon site - Family Search - is mostly useful for earlier records (17th and 18th centuries), after that they start to get a bit patchy the more recent the records.
As you probably know it's only since 1837 that births, marriages and deaths have had to be registered by law - before that it was just the local churches that recorded them, and this is where the mormons (LDS) records are useful.
They have a vast collection of filmed church records that they and many volunteers transcribe. I do a bit myself and the advantage over official online records is the extra info you get from them.
The censuses records are a great source of info and good fun too

my sister has been doing ours for years now, she's gone back to early 1700's on my mum's side, and is now back to the late 1800's on my dads. lots of intresting things you find out when researching family. we've had a strongman, music professor, captains of ships, football manager (i think) and a lord :D

she goes to a meeting every other week in wigan, were people gather to talk about research and offer advice and tips.

I am back to 1672 with my fathers side, I have a family website and have had 9226 hits from all over the world plus numerous emails.
I keep going back and doing a bit at a time as it can become very addictive.

Been trying to do mine for a while but before 1940 all family in southern ireland cant find hardly anything.....................any suggestions peeps?
