Love your pictures sirob, are these pictures you took yourself at the time or were they taken by your parents, where they part of a project? and how come you had the hindsight to take such pictures, these really are a great set of pics as the majority of them depict the areas where I grew up, cant wait for the next set. THANKS SIROB
wonderful stuff :handclap:
Fantastic pics :handclap::handclap:
I'm back from sunny Spain, so more pics again!
A bit of background, first. I was born and grew up in Walton. My father encouraged me to take up photography, by presenting me with a Brownie 127 in the early 1960's. Apart from the usual snaps, I became horrified at the wholesale demolition of whole districts, not to mention a way of life, and tried to record what I could. When I could afford colour, this continued as my own private project that has remained unseen, until now. They could so easily have ended up in landfill, but I want to share them with everyone. They are all mine, unless stated and I am pleased at the feedback. Enjoy!
County road, Walton, from Hale Road looking north, March 1973
Everton Valley, inc. Derby Arms pub, March 1973
Westminster Road, Kirkdale, from Furness St. looking north, March 1973
Bedford Road, Walton, note Bedford, middle left March 1973
wonderful stuff. :handclap:
welcome back, we've missed your great pictures.
Welcome back.
The Bedford is very timely as demolition started today.
Somebody emailed me to say that they'd started to take the tiles off, so I suppose I could record the demolition.
Something I certainly would rather not have seen.
As the poor Bedford, part of my childhood, goes to the cinema index in the sky, I feel it in keeping to provide a requiem for another great building. "you take them for granted, until one day they're gone!"
Its a fine June Sunday morning in 1971. In the middle of Liverpool it's the end of an era for a once proud Central Station. The previous night, British Rail closed it, except for a temporary booking hut on Platform 4 for the Gateacre line, until that could be closed too.
The empty forecourt, wood panelled booking hall still advertising places to travel to, - but not from here! A once bustling concourse now only echoes to the detritus from the previous day blowing about. The only waiting here now is for the wreckers ball, which came on the 19 th July.
what great shots. I don't really remember the old Central so it's great to see those photos. Thank you :PDT11
Further to my last posting, the death throes of the Majestic Cinema, Daulby Street, August 1970
Rare, in that the demolition contractors let me in, to roam freely(pre HSE days).
No doubt they thought that I was the district nutter!!!!!
Outside view, projection room, balcony demolition and stage with contractor on it. The black line across the screen is a fallen top masking curtain.
Under the balcony was a room packed with the archive of the cinema; old framed photos, plans, documents, etc. I did rescue an old seating plan and the fire record, ie; played in the event of fire to alert the staff - not the patrons. It was "Three blind Mice"!!!!! complete with Majestic sticker. Wish I could have saved more.
At least a little bit was saved and as every picture has a story, these were my attempts at "arty pics. and the background to it.
the central pictures are great!
Some B&W for a change;
County Road bridge/Spellow Tunnel from the cab of 8F 48168 on 3 rd May 1968. The remains of Spellow Station platforms are beyond
And one of the driver!
Walton engine shed(CLC). Note the water tower and half timbered house on Queens Drive. Found this decades ago at a fair. Don't know who to credit it to.
Kirkdale Tunnels, From Antonio Street Bridge, Bootle late 1950's. My Dad used to bring me here as a child. Found this among his possessions, after his death.
Kirkdale Station and porter! 1965. Typifies the gloomy holes that a lot of suburban stations were then! Electric trains and gas lighting!
Again fantastic photos.
You should watermak them with your name so no one can take credit for them except you.
Excellent.
In 1960, off City Road, Walton, a bonfire was being built. scattered around it were hundreds of glass lantern slides. even as a child of 9, I thought they should be saved and grabbed as many as I could. Until now they have gathered dust, but as they can now be scanned, have a look!
The church decorated is Linacre Methodist on Stanley Road, Litherland.
But where was Crosby Lighthouse??????
Looking towards Walton Hospital from flats, Breeze Hill.
West Derby, from church tower.
Towards Norris Green, from Cherry Ave. flats All August 1970
Mather Ave. towards Garston. March 1973
Liverpool Institute for Boys, Mount St. March 1973
well done you!
here's a bit online about the lighthouse
In 1971, a small industrial steam locomotive was restored in Princes Dock loco shed(Mersey Docks & Harbour Board). It was test steamed and these rare pictures are included because I feel that they show how atmospheric, the area once was.
The policeman in the last pic is saying " you can't park that thing here"
All July 1971.
Thanks for posting all your smashing pics :PDT11
Good them. And I agree fantastic story.Lucky you had sense at that age eh :PDT11
Got these yesterday.. the first is Litherland depot next is birkenhead north, with noddy the cat sitting on the platform. anyone got anymore station, or depot cats?. a scruffy ribble bus at mann island. and last a steamy Exchange sta
Crackin' pics, Merseywail, so there are more out there!
Sorry, I never photographed Norris Green.
Some rare shots, although outside Liverpool, may be of interest.
When I had a push bike in the early 60's, I went all over south west Lancashire, looking at closed railway lines. The box brownie went too.
Altcar and Hillhouse station, Liverpol platform, 20 th June 1964
As above, Booking office entrance.
Note; Because a railwayman lived there, it survived complete until the late 60's. I have a shot of the main buildings, but it is too dark to copy.
Ainsdale Beach station remains, same date, now under the coast road!
Sefton and Maghull station, boarded and de-leaded, same date.
Churchtown station during demolition, (this was electrified as far as Crossens on the Southport - Preston line - which was demolished with indecent haste after closure in 1964.) 31 January, 1965.
Skelmersdale station on 2nd March 1965. the track was being lifted between here and Rainford Junction, at this time.
Some good & rare shots there Sirob. A great shame about the loss of the west lancs line. Would have made a great preserved line, with steam from southport central to preston fishergate
To carry on the railway theme;
Aintree Central under snow, 28 december 1964
-And re-opened on Grand National Day, 1965
Plus The Blue Pullman at Sefton Arms, next door.
These have been restored from paper negs, cheap photography but could only be printed by the film maker!
Towards the cathederals, over Lime Street Station roof, August 1970
Deserted playgrounds, Liverpool Institute, Mount Street, February 1991
After the Toxteth Riots of 1982
Top of West Derby Road(Hippodrome), August 1970
Absolutley superb Sirob - you do have some really great photos.
I am also from Walton (top of Spellow Lane actually, next door to the old church at the top of the road on the RHS) & it's just how I remember the area. Although I was more of an 80's kid, but it hadn't seem to have changed that much in 10 years.
The biggest difference in all of your photos is the total absence of road traffic.
Being a rail enthusiast, I am of course totally biased toward rail. However, this still doesn't change the fact that we had a superb local rail network, which started to whither away during the 50's & then of course drastically reduced even further after Dr. Beeching wielded his 'axe' in the the 60's.
I don't suppose you have any more of the old Central & Exchange stations do you?
Loved the pics round the St Domingo Rd area. A complete travesty that so many lovely old houses have disappeared, all in the name of redevelopment. I was also overjoyed to see pics of my old school - Hillside High, Breeze Hill. You really have taken me back home!!
Look forward to seeing more of the same - keep em coming!!
Fine photographs here, sirob and merseywail! Many thanks for sharing them with us! :handclap:
Chris :PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Some shots of exchange sta. these any good scouseinmanc ?
Thanks, Scouseinmanc. I was brought up in Bedford Road, by the Stuart Hotel.
Great pics, Merseywail, Exchange just as I remember it! Somehow, B&W does it justice.
Fernhill Road/Derby Park, Bootle,
Breeze Hill/Southport Road junction, Both August 1970
Poplar Street(off Breck Road), March 1973. This was a typical scene; the pub has gone, houses boarded up, gap on RH side from the blitz and the bulldozers soon to do what Hitler forgot!!!!
Truncated Landing Stage, Pier Head, March 1977
Waterfront from a ferry, March 1977
Thanks for sharing these pics Sirob.
That school at the end of Poplar st has now been demolished.
I used to play in Derby park years ago, to young to remember the lake though. I and a large number of people stood at the breeze hill / southport rd junc to watch st Johns house ,( the old tax office) being blown up. still think they should have got Ken Dodd to to press the button!!! Keep em coming sirob .
Thanks, lindylou. Only found out it was Poplar Street last night. Just had it down as "slums Everton" so had to get the old maps out!
