Yeah, the L postcode continues as far as Burscough/Rufford before the Preston (PR) Postcode takes over.

That's true, it's not even in Merseyside but the Liverpool streets site is doing all the L postcodes.

Good pics Ged. I like Ormskirk shops :handclap:
"Ta! Ged, I enjoyed the pics. I visited Ormskirk Market last time I was in UK, brought back some good memories" Cheers:PDT_Aliboronz_24:
I;d visit Omskirk more If It didn't cost ?5.20 on the train!
Should be close to driving soon though.:PDT_Piratz_26:
Cheap at half the price. Aren't you a student or out of work. Should be free then as far as Maghull at least. Cycle the rest in 15 mins easy peasy.
I always like to go to the lovely Mystic Mews, in Ormskirk, which is a nice arcade off the main street with some lovely but expensive shops off each side. There is a mad shop called the Fairy Wing Repair Shop at the end of Mystic Mewswhich has all manner of odd things. You can get a reasonably priced cup of tea in Chapel Gallery and also have a gander at the latest art works.
I think the increasing student population from Edge Hill is changing the face of Ormskirk in terms of shopping and that seems a good thing to me as it was stagnating a bit a couple of years ago

Nice one Joe.
Very nice Joe. Stokers Furniture store was once a school. There's pics in an old book showing kids in the playground, the wall of which was right on the main road though a none busy main road back then.
The church is only one of two in the country with both a spire and tower due to two old ladies bequeting their savings to the church with one instructing a tower to be built, the other a steeple/spire.
My Dad used to tell me about the two sisters who couldn't decide about whether to have a steeple or a tower. Unfortunately, it seems it is a myth. The steeple dates from the 1400s (rebuilt from 1790 - 1832) whilst the tower dates from around the time of the dissolution of the monasteries (mid C16) when Burscough Priory was closed and Ormskirk church got their bells and built the tower to house them. But the legend of the sisters is very widespread.
Seems even Spike Milligan got it wrong which is a shame as it's a great rhyme and story:

Thanks, Julie and Ged. The revised story sounds closer to the truth. I remember the church very well from Ribble bus journeys I used to take with my Grandad when we went to Blackpool or Preston. After he retired from the Post Office telephones as a general manager he had a job installing phones for the "Blower" in betting shops. My wife and I drove through Ormskirk, at least on the bypass, on our way from Liverpool up to Lancaster in October, on our way to catch the ferry from Heysham to Warrenpoint, Northern Ireland. I regret we did not have time to have a look at the church. Hopefully on our next trip to the UK, . . . :)

Ye olde drinking fountain in Ormskirk,1858
Open for the last month, the proprietor of this shop claims to be able to get his hands on any of your childhood sweets from sweet tobacco, liquorice sticks, sherbet dips, bulls eyes, arrow bars, egg n milks, bon bons, sugar barley, black jacks, spanish gold, gobstopper, truffles, rum balls or whatever and is doing a roaring trade.

The Continental Market was in Ormskirk today which means Spanish Paella in great big pans, Frankfurters like only the Germans know how, Belgian Chocolates and my fave, French Garlic Prawns the size of Mr T's fingers.

Nice one Ged.
Spent a lot of summers there as a pup.Worked on the library last year and Edge Hill in 2004 (the FacEd).Hasn't changed that much, the market it not as big as it was but the place is full of charity shops. The locals are livin' in the past, every new thing they try to stop.More building at Edge Hill(the towns biggest employer, the studets put loads of cash in and they don't want it) My mum and some friends wanted to open a day center for the terminally ill,a place where their carers could leave them so they could do shopping etc.Oh no! Ormskirk does not want sick people, lowers the tone etc, etc.
And another thing,in reply to Zappas older posts,go and have a look at the Scott estate, off the A59 by where Burscough Rd meet it,BEIRUT.
Thanks Ged for all these terrific pics ,reminding me of a great day I had in Ormskirk in '93 on a trip home ,on Market Day too! I toured the church & cemetery ,noting the gravestones as pathways , felt a little odd walking on folks gravestones though. Ron
Its a nice little town with some good tea shops. I love Mystic Mews, the lovely old arcade of shops off the main street. I like the fact that Edge Hill University has expanded, although I dont think all the locals agree. The town seemed in danger of dying a few years ago. Chapel Art Gallery and Teashop is a nice place to stop and have tea and a browse. Ruff Woods, just outside the town is gorgeous too.
There's about 3 millions bakers/cafes. I don't know how the town supports them all. They even had two Sayers in the same street until they restructured that time and closed one down.
I think the locals are a bit miffed about some of the rowdy student antics. Wednesday night is cheap ale and the town's only club is open til 1am - Las Vegas or what eh? :)
I absolutely love visiting Ormskirk every time I am home from Australia, I particularly enjoy market day on a Thursday and a Saturday, and I found out recently that the West Lancs Town crier, Don Evans, ls living in my old house up on Elmers Green, Skelmersdale, I wish I was still living there , a beautiful area, in all of Lancs, Beacon Park etc, if any of you know this area. I know where John Zapper is coming from Kerv , as much as I love my old city of Liverpool , a lot of it has declined, much to the worse, from when I was living there, and I go back far longer than you, 1942 till the present, and I still go back in my memories of how it used to be. But still proud to be a Scouser.

This is now an Iceland.
Yes, I know Elmers Green well, the post part of Skem ;) High up, not far from Dalton, great views - you can see the Cathedrals and Tower from there.
My mums mum and all her family are from Ormskirk/Lathom I got her side of the family tree to the 1700's in no time.
All the rest are Irish and as soon as I hit them its a brick wall, researching Irish ancestry is so so difficult.
You've done well getting back to the 1700's there H.
The problem with the Irish ancestry records is they were all destroyed in a fire so I've found it difficult to get any further back than my gt gt gt grandparents coming over during the famine in the mid 1840s.
Yeah but that was just the Govt records Ged, all the Church records are still there, its just knowing what district and Church to look in.
I got my Dads side to 1843 they came over from Dublin ( found a source on Census for info), and even though I know there Dubliners I can't go further online, need to get over there and scour the archives to find wedding and birth info.
Ormskirk info was so easy Ged, its all been transcribed and free to get online.

Great stuff H. Looks like a cheap ferry in the summer and plenty of guinness to fuel you around.
Ah tomorrow would be the day for sure begorra!
Catch yerself on.
this is in Ormskirk parish church, any idea what it is? Looks like one of the old liverpools urinals which were on the dock rd
I want to live in one of those big posh houses in Ruff Lane in Ormskirk. They are gorgeous. Just far enough out of the town to be quite but still accessible. A previous postee wonders how the town can support all the cake shops. Thats because all the students wander around scoffing them all day. It still has really old fashioned butchers and independent cake shops too.
Joe Royle still lives in Ruff Lane, saw him the other sunday morning. A big house with a sweeping drive, in one side, out the other. Some grand properties in Ormskirk and Aughton.
In 1956 the murder of shopkeepers, the Ormesher sisters rocked the small market town of Ormskirk and despite every male over the age of 16 being fingerprinted, the murderer was never found.

Gypsy was performing at Ormskirk clock tower last saturday.
Her voice was captivating, effortless opera. I was never into that sort of thing but have accompanied my better half to a few Andrea Bocelli concerts (imho better than Pavarotti)
I was talking to her, I'd heard her and her husband 'Purple' on Radio Merseyside the other week. She's sold out the Royal Court in the past and is next up on Southport Theatre. And no, i'm not on a commission.
