Entrance porch to Sudley House
This had been a pub in Victorian days, and it was finally listed in the 1908 edition of Gore's directory.
The only way to find out the name was to check the large scale 1890 edition of the Ordnance Survey map.
Not surprisingly, perhaps, it was called the Bridewell Vaults.
From 1910 Gore's lists the occupants as S McCain & Sons, provision merchants, and this shop front almost certainly dates from that time.
McCains had the premises until 1962, by which time they were described as egg merchants.
It appears to have been unoccupied at least until the end of the 1960s (when street directories ceased to be published).
It was occupied until a couple of years ago as offices, (estate agents, solicitors, or something like that).

Great detective work Philip.
They've got that book in the Clearance Book Centre, so I thought I'd see what the author had to say about 31 Cheapside, seeing as how it's been chosen for the cover.
"There's an interesting shop front in Cheapside, opposite the Bridewell."
And that was all!
I wonder how many hours' research David Lewis put into finding that out? :PDT_Piratz_26:

This building has recently been refurbished as office space.

I could state the obvious and say it's an unusually designed warehouse.

just then a member of staff came down the stairs by it, knocked on the window and mouthed "you want a better photo". I nodded and he opened the fire door and let me in. there were 3 there all done by local children.
I'd love the first one in my bathroom!

in the Liverpool museum at Anfield. :lfc:
There's a story behind that Hatfield Hotel.
A pub was built next to Sefton Park station and they applied for a licence.
In fact, they applied for a licence 12 times, and each time it was refused, so that is a case of a pub being built which has never served any ale!

the doorway mosaics are fab. they look so much better than plain boring tiles. even the old marble steps are great.
haven't been around town much looking for them as I've been concentrating on suburbs. nice to know they still exist in the city centre considering all the rebuilding going on.
there used to be a Liptons one at the Lawrence Rd (Wavertree) Liptons/Maypole (now there's a blast from the past). Shop is vacant now, but the mosaic was either damaged or removed in the 90's as far as I know.
Oakfield Rd, op the George (builders were in there so they had the shutters up)

I believe there are some mosaic pictures in Moorfields station. I never go in there so I don't know.
Anyone here seen them ?
I've got the tile picture ones so I can put them up. I didn't post them as I thought tiles too big to be a proper mosaic. I think there's 1 in the walkthrough to Old Hall St, there's also ethnic groups represented in glass cases. didn't have camera with me when I last went through there 3 weeks ago.
these are the older tiled pictures at Moorfields

Oh they're lovely. Thanks for posting. It's the first time I've seen them.
ps,
actually, it was my dad who told me about them. He uses Moorfields station from time to time. I never have cause to go there, so I wondered what the pictures are like.
I'll show him these pics.
Thanks Quincy.
Speaking of mosaics, what ever happened to the mosaic of the waterfront that was situated at the rear of the mersey tunnel entrance at the apex of Manchester St and Dale St? It was about four foot in diameter and about three foot high. it showed a section of the river with Liverpool and Birkenhead.
