:) A fine picture from young Max there.
Are old pics allowed on Picture of the Day?
They must be taken with your own camera....
1986 photo.
The Futurist has remained closed since 1982, despite this "Sold" sign appearing in 1986.
Along with all the other buildings between the Crown and the Vines, it is scheduled for demolition.

Aladdins Palace...that brings back memories!! A quid a go on the driving game 'Hard Drivin' - I spent my misspent 6th form there and then when I got told that computer games wouldn't get me far in life, I've now had my 13th year at Sony! :Colorz_Grey_PDT_16:
Nice pic Phil. It still looked in good nick in your pic. Took this in 2002 and it's starting to look a bit tatty:PDT_Xtremez_12:

Thanks, Dave.
Love your pic.
Now, apart from looking very tatty, it's got 2 big banners on either side, put up by the Council (I think), promoting them as advertising space. :disgust:
Also, the building to the right of the Futurist in your pic looks fine. In my one, they've gone and painted the frames in a nasty blue colour and painted the building beige!
Didn't that used to be The Hippodrome? Had some great nights in there when I was 17/18 :PDT_Aliboronz_24:

What do you mean their knocking it down.. no way:disgust:
they could use it for something, im fed up losing all the old buildings. i suppose St Georges Hall would make a nice multi car park.
Became the Hippodrome nightclub in the 80s after being the Futurist (probably something else in between too) isn't it a lap dancing place now X in the city I think ?- not that i've been there mind.
X In the City is next door to that building I think.
X in the city was the Hippadrome wasn't it. I liked that place, especially the couches on the half landing - dead comfy when you needed a sit down.
I'm not owning up to knowing exactly where that building is ;o)
They were both cinemas.
The Futurist opened in 1912 as the Lime Street Picture House, and the Scala opened next door in 1916.
The first manager of the Scala was Vivian Van Damm, recently portrayed on TV by Bob Hoskins as the first manager of the famous Windmill Theatre in Soho.
Both cinemas were eventually taken over by ABC who closed them when they tripled the Forum/ABC (over the road).
The Scala became the Hippodrome and is now X in the City, advertised as a Superior Gentleman's Club. Honest.
This is the Scala from a 1916 programme.
The front was damaged during the war, and was repaired in a modern style.
I remember going to the Futurist to see Earthquake in 'sensurround', the seats would rattle in sync with the action on the screen. 2 further films, Rollercoaster and Battle at Midway, were shot using the same process before it was scrapped. I wonder how much the mangers of the Furturist paid to kit the cinema out!
I also spent of a lot of my wages in the early 1980's on clothes from Harold Ian, a couple of doors down.
Picture Of The Day - Jan 10th 2007
This photo was taken just minutes into 2007 on the New Brighton promenade.

I was just testing out the night mode on a new camera and the results aren't too bad.
