Hi gregs dad,
I think with the rest of St. Michael's-in-the-Hamlet this is a bit of got-up early nineteenth century medievalism rather than being authentically from the Middle Ages. Just like the supposed castle that stood in "Cain's Fields" mentioned (and illustrated) in Robert Griffiths' 1907 History of the Royal and Ancient Park of Toxteth, which the author labels a landowner's folly and not the real deal. The cross is not mentioned by Griffiths and if it had been authentically centuries-old when he wrote his history, I would have expected him to mention it.
All the best
Chris
