Everton history and clearance areas

Those pics would be interesting to see Samp. Do they have them on display in the Shewsy or online anywhere?

I used to drink in the Tugboat and sometimes went to the Shewsy as we always knew it, Tochy was the bloke that was running some of the activities.

My mate's brother got married in the attached St. Peter's church there and when I was in a group in 1981 we played there a couple of times. A lad who was in our current group, John Colfar also currently has something to do with it.

It was very sad about the lad from Old Swan being killed outside there last year. Keep up the good work Samp.

Many of the photos are on comuter in the club but there are still many more to scan in. If you have a free Friday morning anytime you would be welcome to come in and see what we have got. Its early days yet for the internet or the DVD. I myself think the originals should go to the local history section of the William Brown Library, but its not for me to decide.

I suppose as long as the photos are being stored by some organisation or other for future generations, that's the main thing. Lee Jones League of Welldoers and the Scottie Press also have a great archive, I suppose it would be wise for the LRO to at least have copies so a format is all in one place. Work commitments make it a bit difficult for fridays or I would but thanks for the invite. Are the photos from private individuals who just happened to capture the past.

Most of the photos from the past have been taken over the years by individuals at the club and some go back as far as 1904. Later photos have been taken by people from the district and passed on to the club or taken by club members themselves, its a very mixed bag. Also quite a few have been taken from old club and church magazines. Many are of sporting events relating to the club. I will sort some out for the forum to give you an idea.

pic 1 - This picture shows slum clearance in the region of Back Prince Edwin St. The building in the background is the Ann Fowler women?s hostel.

pic 4 - No1 court off Portland place. This is just across the road from the Roscommon Cinema on the left hand side of Portland Place.

pic 5 - This is a photo of the club taken in 1942 after the blitz. It shows the remains of the houses next to the club. The far building on the extreme right of the picture is in Great Homer St.

This is how the archive team come across rare photos, this one was found in a bound journal of club magazines from the library at Shrewsbury School.

Pic 1 Lampost at bottom of Sackville St, Everton. Interesting to note that the multi story flats in the background have now been demolished.

Sackville St School in the foreground, (now demolished) the old Shrewsbury boys club can be seen just behind the terraced houses in Sackville St. The lane on the left of the picture is Back Roscommon St

Another great batch Samp. Those high rise were Mazzini, Garabaldi and Cavour House, named after the Italian reformists (there you go John, one for Debz)

My nan and an aubty and uncle lived high up in Mazzini, a great view that I under appreciated as a 12 year old.

That pic is from one of the heights as you can just see the corner of one of them in front. That horse and cart one is so clear, a great photo and one of Shewsy house with the charabanc.

Hello all

Does anyone have any memories of a Caros Street off Netherfield Road? I have learned that my great grandad lived there in 1911 and I'm trying to work out where it was and what it was like. Seems to have been in the vicinity of the John Bagot Hospital. I'd be interested to hear what anyone remembers or knows of that street...
