Has anyone seen the films by the Lumiere brothers from 1897 and 1901 of the city and the docks, some taken from the overhead railway?
Was shown it by Brian Hatton an architectural historian who lectured at John Moores school of Architecture. Amazing footage
The film, showing Lime st with horse drawn carriages has St. John's church in situ in it's grounds which were to become St. John's gardens in 1904. Also footage from a moving train on the overhead showing docks from North to South including George's dock which became the site for the Royal liver Buildings and the Albert Dock, complete with it's original clock tower.
i haven't seen it :(
is there anywhere online to watch it?
There is some of that footage on the BBC you will need to have realplayer installed. Its great.
