infoon? Is that like a buffoon but more intelligent?
hee,hee, :)
[QUOTEThere was once a couple of cinemas in Prescot. Not sure what they were called
Hope this helps. The principal cinema in Prescot was 'The Lime House', and like other cinemas after the run down, was converted into a supermarket. Can't be positive, but I think it was Lennons.
I remember seeing some good films on there; Shane, Oklahoma, From Here to Eternity and more I can't bring to mind. Used to go 1st house every Tuesday with 'me mam' and go the chippy afterwards. Not many people had Television in those days, it was only about ten years after the war, so the 'fillims' was the usual means of family entertainment.
We moved up to Huyton from Old Swan in 1952 and I was born in Ulster Rd (1942), right opposite the Curzon.
But it was the Regent that held the Saturday Matinee for a tanner. Tarzan, Lash Larue had the star billing with Batman as the serial.
If you wanted to see Johnny Mac Brown you had to go to the New Premier at the corner of Green Lane.
If you wanted a black eye, you went to the Swan. Like other cinemas of the time when cash was tight could get in the Swan for the Saturday Matinee with two empty jam-jars.
But you had to make sure you took a gumshield and wore pumps for a fast getaway when the flix let out.
I'll have to make sure you can find none ;)

I think so, so i'd put the pic at about 1929 maybe - how long would it have taken back then to build the cinema?
Yes, Ged, 1929.
I've had to wait for a reply from somebody who knows.
He says:
"It was built by J A Milestone between 12 March 1930 and 18 May 1931.
The new cinema was announced in the Liverpool Echo dated 27 June 1929.
W Aubrey Thomas supplied plans in 1925 of a cinema to be built on the site, but that scheme wasn't followed through."
Just imagine if that had been built.
A cinema by the architect of the Royal Liver Building.
I reckon it's worth reposting this, incase any of the newer members ain't seen these photos

It's a pity his old Royal infirmary ones have, I was looking for those only a couple of months ago.
Nice pic Joe. See inside the place near the bottom of this page.
My first date with my wife was in there on New years day 1955 after meeting up with her on New Years eve outside St Mary`s Church,Walton, where people used to gather to let the new year in.
We then went back to her friends for an all night party and made a date to meet outside the Princess.
She had to travel from Old Swan while I just walked up from Kirkdale but I did see her home safe,as always a gentleman. The picture was Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and I bought the ice creams.
Nice Joe. Felt safe on home territory eh? :)
The old Derby Cinema on Scotland Road reveals it's sign and other bits of writing on the side wall after having its cladding removed.

btw any photos of the old Gem cinema Vescock Sstreet??
I've got a pic of the Gem but only as the Gem Social Club in the 80s. It was a pretty uninspiring looking building, not one you'd associate with the lavish cinema architecture of the big ones.
Iam still looking for a pic of the old cabbage hall cinema.
Have tried all sources, without any success at all
Sirob from this site now has one and will be including it in his new Cinema book.
Don't forget me if you ever find one! :)
I'd love to see a photo of the old Cabbage cinema. I'd like to see any of that end of Lower Breck rd in general. (that end was formerly called Rochester rd).
The annoying thing is that we've got a couple of family snaps taken right by there 1930s, but the camera is facing the Willow Bank pub and not the cinema !:PDT_Xtremez_42:
Please excuse all and any geographical ignorance I inadvertently display...

Alas Cabbage Hall Cinema may be too vague a description for it yielded nothing. :(
