Indeed :) I grew up living in that area on Speke Road at the top of Wharfedale St. Its interesting to read about the vineyard having previously existed there. Wonder if the wine was was any good .

A few shots at the junction of Garston Old Rd and Whitehedge Rd. The black and white block of houses were built by a Welsh building company.
A CONCERT to find an unknown band to play at this year’s Mathew Street Festival was called off midway through, as thugs threw missiles at performers and taunted a rap band with racist abuse. more
Erm, Police anyone? Did it not occour to them to call the Police as things escalated? I could hear the noise from my mums but wasn't aware of the cancellation, shame. However, who was marshalling it? Unless its a blag and the bands were crap.

Has anyone noticed the smart tidying up/ restoration of Seddon House on the corner opposite the old Garston Hotel?
Yes but I didn't think much of the roof job last time I saw it !!! The whole of this junction with St Mary's Rd is being renovated. One thing I've noticed in Liverpool over the last year is that a lot of empty property above old shops is being brought back into residential use. I suspect this is mainly to house the influx of immigrants into Liverpool. I think there are govenment grants for these types of renovations for it makes economic sense to do the work
Morning Taffy :PDT11 Great pics and thanks.
Oh dear about the Manc firm
Is the hotel opposite in use? That looks like it had a make over too, yet still has the odd window borded up.
MORE than £2m of highway improvement and environmental work has begun in Garston.
Regeneration agency Liverpool Land Development Company has appointed engineering experts the Halcrow Group to carry out the £2.2m project in Horrocks Avenue.
They say businesses and residents will benefit from the work to the key route that links Liverpool John Lennon airport and the main business sites in Speke and Halewood with the new Liverpool South Parkway interchange.
Work is expected to continue for 30 weeks until next January.

Its an impressive building with that dome at the top. Good to see the old Graham's Cartons site developed too (I used to think it was Graham's Cartoons when I was a kid)
This was once a thriving street full of busy shops. For a variety of reasons, many of these have now closed together with associated banks etc. I have noticed in recent months the beginning of a revival of the street with a number of new mainly service type shops (cafes, hairdressers etc) opening. Let's hope this continues.
Another feature is that the space above these empty shops is starting to be brought back into use as residential accomodation. One such building which clearly illustrates its 1868 Welsh Builder origin is given below. Photo taken July 20th, 2007 together with the same building in 2005.
Excellent Taffy, I hope it continues too :PDT11. With the Horrocks Av. works beginning plus the housing being built, Garston should continue to thrive :handclap:
Still wish Joysave was still there
One of the downsides of turning former commercial properties into residential accomodation is that if it isn't done sympathetically it can have the effect of shaping the direction regeneration takes in a particular area. For example, and maybe it's the rain or choice of colours but in Taffy's photo, Seddon House looks a bit of a bodge job. When I saw the work going on from the car my initial fantasy was that it was going to be a modern continental bar and eaterie specialising in every Cains product and the best of Belgian beer. When it became clear that this wasn't happening, I thought that it would be made over so that it would look as though it had always been residential. If this is the end product, whilst better than semi-dereliction, it might set a tone for the rest of St Mary's Road that could mean more of the same instead of a touch of Lark Lane.
Agreed, few Liverpool shop to living accomodation conversions are done at all sympathetically. Having said that, I saw one in Toxteth today on I think North Hill St. The complete shop frontage over the whole block had been removed and replaced with matching yellow brick and correctly proportioned windows and doors. Another on Mill St, Toxteth is a complete mess but the building was a complete wreck before this crude restoration took place.

Thanks for the comments, I'm one happy chappy seeing these changes in Garston.
What struck me also was the buzz around the new village apartment developments opposite Woolton Carpets, people coming and going, young couples etc....
Lets hope that the area alongside (The Baths and Public Toilets) now get suitable developments, I can see that happening too.
Within a stones throw away there's the Mersey Retail Park, the Old Matchworks developments, PC World, The Interchange, a main route into Town, David Lloyd Gym, Garston Park.......
:)
I was under the bridge last weekend Kev and was pleasantly surprised at the new developments facing the gas tank. The last time I was down there was a few years ago for the 'Up the shore' and 'Devil's Gallop' race from the old Bankfield House. I'm sure they'll need a new pub with the Blackburne Arms, the Victoria and Kitty Mac's now no more, I suppose the one on King St can expect some more custom in the future. Great pics.

Excavation work has begun again on the Old Mill site opposite St. Michael's Church.....
hiya, enjoying this thread as i`m a garston man.can someone tell me whether the work on the apartments on the old garston hotel has stopped completely..nothing seems to be happening now for 3 weeks???.i live in st mary`s rd and pass every day on my way to work, seems to have come to a standstill..regards..allan
Hi all Garstonians,
This is my first time on the forum,i left Garston in 1962 aged 16 i lived under the bridge first in Thomas st where as a young lad we used to make a few bob waiting at the dock gates and taking the sailors and luggage up the village to the Mariners pub witch had a bit of a reputation for the ladies of the night, and there was alway some enterprising kids knocking on the door selling bananas witch were in abundance because of the banana boats,i then moved to Chesterton st the protestant side of Window lane my memories are of playing football on Top park and long days spent down the shore where me and my mates had our own ocean going liner to play on it was called the Eleoner better than a playstation that the kids have today i managed to get back to Garston last year and take some photos before it all goes i think in a few years time it will be the place to be. By the way my schhools where Banks rd and Gilmour Heath rd also a few memories of Bankhall it was hard to get in the club in the 50s i remember having to go and see the vicar in Horrocks avenue to see if me and a mate could go along i could go on. :) John Davis
"And a big welcome from me'! to a couple more Garstonians!:PDT11
(PS. the names Davis is wellknown by me! probably ex Byron Street!!!):handclap:
A couple of photos of phase 2 of the archeological excavation of the old mill site opposite St Michael's church. What seems to be happening is that the thick concrete raft, laid when the site was used as a metalurgical works by Blackwell's, is being removed to give more access to the site.
