Hi Waterways! I am familiar with the George Hotel. Would the George be considered a Honky Tonk? I was picturing something more dance - oriented... What are your thoughts?
The Other Place,,Billie Joe's,,The Archways,,,The Night Owl,,Cindy's,,Annabelles,,
Went in the Shanghai once and got an ash tray thrown at me,,,,
True Ged, we played there too, a weird hippy bunch called Catch 22, also there was raynfords behind Probe, the Cumberland, Planet X,Rudis at the dale st end of cumberland st,about a decade later there was the lomax in the same street, then when it all went aciiiid, there was the coconut grove on green lane, mon, wed, fri and saturdays with the unforgettable BRUMMY the bouncer on the mikes
I also recall the last days of the Irish Centre around 96/97, a beautiful building, the owners had very kindly let us rehearse in the cellar, every day it opened to the public around 10.am and served the best breakfast you could find, including white pudding, which id never come across, to mainly students and the local community,a great mish mash of people who really appreciated its place in the community. We were even lucky enough to watch Peter Green soundcheck, as well as acts including the Real People and many others in its fine auditorium. At the time we were unaware of the financial plight they were under and when we turned up one morning to rehearse, the whole place was locked up and boarded with all the owners assets inside and of course, our gear in the cellar. Straight away,Kevin ,the main owner staged a roof top protest/presence and he was there on that roof for months, battling to get everything out of the building, including our gear.In the winter months,we would all turn up with food, blankets etc, people from right across the board ,showing solidarity.....eventually they released everything from the building and Kevin came down from the roof but the building has never recovered,we often think about Kev, be great if he read this forum and hes got his feet up in a nice warm place.Let us know mate x.

Was down Regent rd way, today, and took a couple of pic's of the gradually disintegrating "Norseman" club! Never went there myself, but heard plenty of tales!Does anyone know when it closed? You can see the effect of the partial road closure,a few years back,as there are several other closed premises, such as the "Langton Castle" pub, nearby.

Me,I'm just a lawnmower..... You can tell me by the way I walk.
:)
Does anyone remember the name of the club, I think it was in Fraser Street off London Road. It was quite a trendy place in the 80s. I remember going one night and Ultravox came in after they'd played in the Empire.
I used to go the State which was the best club ever. Before that we used to go to Tuxedos, in between the Conti and Snobs on Wolstenholme Square. A great gang of people used to go to Tuxedos the bouncers even used to arrange days out for the clubgoers!
The club in Fraser Street was Mr Pickwicks. (my first visit there was for the very first Beatles convention over the weekend of John Lennon's birthday 9th/10th October 1977 - what a good way to remember) and I then went there throughout the following years before it was later renamed Heaven.
Thanks Ged. No it wasn't Pickwicks - I went there once and never forgotten! I was racking my brains and remembered in the middle of the night it was Cagneys. Maybe it wasnt in Fraser Street.
Yes it was on the corner of Fraser st and London road and became Gullivers and was part of Sampson and barlows peppermint lounge.
I was gonna say Cagney's! Not a usual haunt, but they had a run of mainly local bands on there, around then, but the only one I can remember is Dalek I,with Alan Gill, who also played with the Teardrop Explodes!
Hi Ged,
I think it was the Peppermint Lounge.EDITED- Dinos and Gullvers also ring a bell.
Cheers,
Chas
I remember Terry O Neil also being a bouncer on the door at Mr Digby's in Birkenhead. I seem to recall him working at the nightclub within the Adelphi Hotel ( during Supercharges heyday), and I think he later on opened a fitness club on the outskirts of Liverpool. Winning the Mr Universe competition might be another of his claims to fame.
Regards,
Chas
I think the club at the Adelphi, was the "Banyan Tree", and Terry O'Neil's gym,was at the top of London rd?
The Banyan Tree is right, I don't know about the owner of the gym but I do recall one at the top of London Road. It was owned by the Fitsmaurice family in the '80's, one of the brothers, Neil, played a major role in " Phoenix Nights" on Channel 4, and has appeared in many Merseyside related films.
Cheers,
Chas
I also recall the band nights. I played there with Farons Flamingos as support to a local "glitter" band. I really enjoyed the night, my only complaint being the large ceiling that gave an echoey sound. The bar with its old oil paintings sticks in my memory and we stayed till the wee small hours drinking. Another night I saw Ian Hunter with his band. This was in the decline era of the club and the stage lights fused and it took 5 minutes before they were fixed. Ian Hunter continued singing during the blackout, a memorable night.
Regards,
Chas
The very first club i went to was the'el torro' on Rice Lane, bladdered after three pints. That was the age of your dance partner placing her finger on top of your head and you had to do a spin,i was already spinning anyway and got carried out by me mates, then had to navigate Higher Lane on my way home. Im ok now......can manage five pints and a kebab.
Much earlier on in this thread clubs of Liverpool 8 have been remembered.
Lots of the places we talked about are mentioned here - (it's about 20 mins long). The sound is a bit poor in parts but worth listening to all of it.

it's a shame it's now mostly all gone and those great socialising times have changed. like someone says in the film - it's all happening in the town centre now, but the city clubs are not always accessible or suitable for all.

ps, funny no one mentions Dutch Eddies (The Tudor) in that film.
bump!
82/83 was the Somali clubs demise, many clubs in Toxteth were not licensed,I fink the only club that was licensed was the Nigerian? been in a few unlicensed one meself when police raids happened.
Remember going into town night clubs and when they closed we would go into upper parliment street clubs(houses really) met some birds at the town night clubs and took em to one of the parly clubs, anyway one of the bird said to her mate..."Bit dark in here ain't it"....
You've seen that cartoon where the lights go out and all you see is white eyes blinking....well it was a case of Dell Boy time...drink up trigg we're leaving.
Didn't think it was that long ago,but.......time flies!
Hi,
I live in a house called Birchmoor at 2 St Michaels Road which is elevated on the corner of Bryanstone Road and St Michaels Road in St Michaels, Aigburth L17.
The house is a large victorian one (built 1873) and was converted into flats sometime in the early seventies but the story goes (handed down through tennants) that it used to be a music club in the late 50's / early 60's. It was possibly called the Birchmoor Social Club but not certain. I have also heard that it was connected to the Marsden family (gerry & the pacemakers, who were from Dingle area so that may tie in) but not sure if that can be relied on. There is lots of evidence that would support it being a music club such as serving hatch gaps in walls etc. but despite lots of online searches I have found no history of the club. I would love to find out more information as I'm passionate about local history so thanks for any info. Here is a photo of the property as it stands now.
