Children at play in the Vauxhall area in 1965. Unseen, except in family "snaps", but a reminder of pre WII days!
The thumbnails are the most convenient way for me to post and as Philip G. says, you can enlarge them.

More "snaps" from the Vauxhall area in 1965, this time in pubs, unfortunately no details of which.
Plenty of pubs;
The Vines, Lime Street, from the top of Lewis's
The Spanish House Hotel, Whitechapel (no veg boxes!)
Yates's Wine Lodge, Lime Street
Unknown pub on Athol Street, Vauxhall
Another unknown pub, but so typical.
All1965
You sat on barrels in the Spanish House.
(Or the tables were barrels).
The last one is the Alexandra in North Hill Street.
Here's how it was in April.

I went in the Alex once ..... OMG! it was rough
More pubs; they do look lovely freshly painted!
The Baltic Fleet, Wapping, 26 May 1975
The Angel Vaults, Stanhope Street, 26 May 1975
Gregsons Well(the Higgies one) Low Hill, 6 July 1975
Two of the Albert Dock on 26 May 1975
I don't know where you keep digging them up from Sirob but great pics once again. :handclap:
Thanks for sharing them.
Thanks, Ged. I get all this stuff from decades of scrounging/collecting and photographing everything that I thought might go.
Tonights offering;
The first two I think are Everton, somewhere
The last three are South Liverpool.
Any location details would be much appreciated:)
All mid 1960's, but no details on back!!!
The Everton pics were taken around the St Georges Hill area...near/within stones throw of the old Everton Lock-up...thats my guestimation anyway!
Not an idea about the South Liverpool images...Get the impression that the Tesco image may be along Aigburth Road...but again that is just a guess I am afraid!
Great set of images as always!
Sirob, if you tell us the names of the other shops by Tesco, I'll check my 1968 Kellys. :PDT11
Thanks for your ideas about my last post. I'll see if I can get any shop names out of the murk!

Trying to figure the tall building on the right,in no'4.The now defunct tax office? The Blacklers ad' brings back some memories, though I dont remember the "Onderful" Peter Pan:unibrow: Any more similar ad's?
2nd South Liverpool seems to be Upper Stanhope Street near to Berkley Street facing Princes Avenue. The 3rd one seems to be same spot but facing towards Windsor Street
Post 490, 1st South Liverpool pic:
Above the Tesco name, I can just see the letters ...WINS?. Now, Tesco took over IrWINS in the 1960s? This may narrow down the location.
Fantastic thread!
Sirob: Alot of these pics you're putting up are film stills. Have you got alot of footage that you're using, and can you make any available?
Thanks!
Irwins were quite a large chain of grocers, and Tesco only managed to move to this part of the country by taking them over (in 1960 or 1961).
The 1968 Kelly's directory lists over 50 Tesco Self Service shops in Liverpool alone, and nearly all of them would have been Irwins, apart from the Tesco in Aigburth Road (which survives) which was perhaps their first new-build in Liverpool.
The name comes from TESsie COhen, wife of the founder.
My evening job at School was for Irwins, and I also remember it being said that TESCO also stood for Thames Embankment Shipping Company.
I'm just going to Google that, and see if I can confirm if that was true.
Edit.
No luck with Google.
I'll have to see if I can find the early history of Tesco which was called: "Pile it High. Sell it Cheap."
I said IN LIVERPOOL in 1968.
Are you including the ones in the Wirral?
They perhaps did have more than 50 in Liverpool between 1961 and 1968, but they progressively closed down the unprofitable ones.
I never dreamt I'd start arguing about the number of Irwins/Tescos. :PDT_Piratz_26:
The black & white images were part of a quantity of pictures that were given to me 10 years ago, by a widow who said that her husband "liked messing with pictures". I gathered that they were film stills, but the locations are mostly unseen, as who would waste film on nondescript streets? I think that they had a lucky escape from landfill and deserve to be shared.

I was only saying I had 2 Irwins listed for Aigburth Rd.
numbers 170 and 670. if you want to check your Kellys and see if the neighbouring shop to TESCO looks like Cohen?
all I said was how many I had on my Irwins store list, I never mentioned any years or Tesco.
The way we were, some reminders of mid 1960'5 life;
Handcart selling fruit(x2)
Window cleaner Bevington Bush?
Rag and bone man in Chinatown
Back yards and lavvies, Everton
Unseen by many, the ornate entrance to Anfield Cemetery in Cherry Lane
This is a railway bridge, under the Bootle branch from Edge Hill.
Perhaps it might at least get weeded!!
Sirob, did you walk through the 'tunnel' to the other side?
Did you snap the Victoria cinema as well?
Philip G, yes I did get the Victoria and a look inside, but there is nothing to suggest that it ever was a cinema! I was going to walk through the "tunnel", but having attracted the attention of a group of lads, decided to escape. Do you need a minder?
The former Royal cinema, Breck Road, Everton
Inside views of the Royal, the last one showing the line of the balcony
I see it's now unique furniture. Wasn't it called Regal a couple of years back as my mate worked there, they also have a branch in Walton rd.
Nice pics of that entrance Sirob and Philip. I like that tunnel one.
The cinema screen at the Philharmonic Hall rises out of the stage and is the last working example of this type, in the world.(x3)

Entrance floor of the Bedford Cinema. This originally said "Bedford", but when Abram & Mitchell bought the building, they replaced it with this.
Hello Sirob. The first two pictures of Everton streets. I think the first one could be St Georges St. Leading up from Netherfield Rd to half way up St Georges Hill.
The second picture is in the same area, maybe Mountjoy Street. The flats in the background I think are the Braddicks, now pulled down and built upon.
Cheers Samp.
Thanks, Samp. Great bit of detective work!:handclap:

Goodness me, Sirob I remember that public toilet at the bottom of Rupert Lane. It was like a big sheet of slate or metal of a dark colour. I used it quite often. No Philip, keep it clean now!!!!!
