Liverpool One [Paradise Street] Shopping Area [Under Construction]

A lot of these shops seem to be moving from elsewhere in the central Liverpool shopping area. I noticed several yesterday in the Church Street area were being advertised to let. Is this really progress to be left with a load of empty shops as their current tenants have simply moved around the corner to the paradise centre.

Have a look at all the empty shops in Bridge Street in Warrington when the same thing happened there with the expansion of the Golden Square development.

True many stores are relocating but many are new to the city or have moved to bigger premises like say the Disney store for instance,anyone who shops there will tell you it was way too small,the restaurants are mostly new too.In HMV's case the shop has dissapeared to give access to the new development.Grovenor are also obliged to fill any vacated stores in the City Centre that have relocated to Liverpool One as part of the original deal,it'll take a few years to settle down I think,the credit crunch isn't helping either.

Is the Eagle going to be a pub again?
Are there any pubs in the new development?
Apart from the Odeon - which is at the very edge of the development - is there anything else that's going to be open in the evening?
Or is it really going to be Gated and locked at night?

There was a debate on here- I can't find the thread now- called 'who owns the streets?. On it I mentioned that Grosvenor and a council spokesman had been on BBC Radio 4's 'You and Yours'. The council person said they'd made Grosvenor sign an undertaking that no gating of the new development would occur and that it would all be open to the public 24 hours a day. Whether that proves to be accurate we'll just have to wait and see.

Similar fears are being expressed here in Chester regarding ING's forthcoming massive new Northgate scheme. Lots of retailers currently in the historic Rows will be tempted by attractive offers to move into the new shops where they will be much less restricted by planning regulations than they are in the listed buildings they currently occupy. What then becomes of these is anyone's guess.

I heard that the Eagle was indeed to remain in situ, but whether as a proper pub or as some sort of wine bar I couldn't say.

Upmarket fashion chain to open store in Liverpool

UPMARKET fashion group Austin Reed yesterday revealed plans to return to Liverpool after three decades away from the city.

The retailer is opening a 2,400 sq ft store later this month at Grosvenor’s Liverpool One development.

Austin Reed’s new Liverpool store is part of an expansion programme that will see a total of 30 shops open this year.

The group, which also operates the womenswear clothing chain CC, wants to grow its UK sites from 329 to nearly 360. It currently has 96 Austin Reed stores and concessions, as well as 233 CC stores – which previously traded as Country Casuals.

The retailer delisted from the London Stock Exchange in January last year, after it was bought for £49m by Guy Naggar and Peter Klimt, the owners of corporate finance group Dawnay Day.

In its first full year as a private company, like-for-like sales rose by 0.8%, with total UK and Ireland revenues 1.8% ahead at £110m. Underlying profitability also improved during the year, from £6.7m to £8.8m.

The group has already opened a new store in London’s Fenchurch Street and another concession in Belfast. As well as Liverpool, other stores in Newcastle and Edinburgh are also scheduled to open this summer. At least nine standalone CC stores, at locations including Bridport, in Dorset, and Bridgnorth, in Shropshire, and 10 concessions, are also in the pipeline.

A CC outlet opened in Heswall last year.

Chief executive Nick Hollingworth said: “We are very pleased to be coming back to Liverpool. We are also very pleased to come to Liverpool One because we are sure it’s going to be a big success.

“The core customer for Austin Reed is doctors, company directors and successful business people. There’s a lot of those people in Liverpool.

“When I took over as chief executive four years ago, I quickly identified Liverpool as a place I wanted to get into. I was surp-rised we weren’t there already.”

Mr Hollingworth said the retailer was pushing ahead with its expansion programme despite concerns about current economic conditions and falling consumer spending.

“Now is an excellent time to be looking at stores, there’s a lot of retail space coming on to the market.

“Conditions are difficult and customer confidence is low. On the other hand, there is a lot of space coming onto the market at the moment and you can get some good deals from landlords,” he said.

I walked down Church street yesterday and the only empty shops I noticed (apoogies if I missed some) were Dolcis (whole company have gone bankrupt) and the jewellers and Jane Norman either side of M&S which are empty because M%S have bought them to expand into.

Most of the shops that are already listed as being in the city are opening second stores which is common in other cities. The majority of the shops around the St Enoch area of Glasgow city centre are duplicated up on Sauchiall street. Oxford street in London has a few examples where upto 3 different stores of the same company are on that street alone.

Any shops left empty in other areas of the city through relocation will be filled by other retailers. If this does not happen quickly, the area will evolve into something else which is fine. Bold street is a toatally different type of shopping area to anything Grosvenor are offering and will not be effected, Church street is always going to be the home of the large chain stores (M$S are not expanding their store for nothing). Lord street is on the edge of the develoment and will actually be improved. St John's is in need of development anyway and is going to get it, this development has only brought it foreward which is surely a good thing. London road will as long as TJ's are there and the shops and wholesalers around Kempston street always be the same. Saying that, this area seems to be quietly on the edge of a diferent type of shopping experience and increase vibrancy and looks like it will get even more student, young proffesional focussed as more new flats, apartments are built. Hopefully some more late openijg businesses such as restaurants.

THE Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will return to Liverpool this month on an official visit to mark the city’s year as European Capital of Culture.

It is a rare second visit in less than six months, following their attendance at the Royal Variety Show held at the Empire Theatre in December last year.

Her Majesty and Prince Philip will spend the day in the city on May 22, when they will visit the Philharmonic Hall and St George’s Hall as well as the new Liverpool One complex, and officially open the Echo Arena Liverpool and BT Convention Centre.

The Royal train will arrive at Lime Street station at 10am and the party will head for the waterfront to unveil a plaque at the Arena and Convention Centre Liverpool, at the Kings Dock.

From there, they go on to Liverpool One around 11am, where the Duke will perform the topping-out ceremony of the latest building in the project to be completed.

Outside St George’s Hall, the Queen will be entertained by Viennese ball dancers and bands taking part in the Streetwaves project, before joining 200 guests for lunch, including representatives from the arts and cultural life of the city.

She will arrive at the Philharmonic Hall just before 2pm.

The Queen is the patron of the RLPO, and a brass quintet from its youth orchestra will play a welcome fanfare on Hope Street as she arrives at Philharmonic Hall.

The welcoming party will include RLPO president Lord Derby, chairman Lorraine Rogers and chief executive Mick Elliott.

On entering the hall, The Queen will listen to the youth choir, conducted by Simon Emery, and will then be escorted to the auditorium where, along with an audience of representatives from the Phil's associated ensembles, supporters, funders and partners, the Royal party will hear a short performance by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Andrew Davis, of Brahms' Variations on a Theme of Haydn.

Mrs Rogers, chairman of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic said: “It is wonderful recognition for the Phil that The Queen should honour us by visiting Philharmonic Hall in her capacity as our patron.

“We have a great opportunity to showcase the orchestra as well as some of the brilliant young musicians in our youth orchestra and choir, and we are looking forward to sharing in person with our Patron, news of our successes, achievements and future plans.”

ACC Liverpool chief executive Bob Prattey said: “It’s an enormous privilege to be welcoming the Queen and we are looking forward to showing her around.

“ACC Liverpool is a magnificent symbol of the city’s rebirth and we’re sure Her Majesty will be left with a sense of the impact it’s already made.”

The visits to ACC, St George’s Hall and Liverpool One are being promoted as ideal locations for the public to greet the Royal visitors.

Indeed, Ged. there are only so many ways that those new buildings on the Paradise Street development can be taken so I tried something a little different.

It was so good to be able to walk around in the sun yesterday!

Pret a Manger are new to the city and are opening in Liverpool One as well as Derby Square.

The first phase opens on May 29th, with the full opening in September. The opening this month should be a good day out with a street carnival and outdoor catwalk throughout the day. I'm not sure if the park opens this month or in September, can anyone clarify?

I've just had a look on the Liverpool ONE website here. It claims that Chavasse Park will be "Liverpool’s answer to New York’s Central Park" but doesn't say when it will open. :rolleyes:
