Here's a reminder of what the building used to look like, when it was supposed to be a "Grot-spot".
Couldn't they see that the signage was the only distinctive thing about the building?

On Boaler St, Liverpool
The Lobster, Croxteth.
Next to the Abattoir.
It's not surprising I didn't notice it when I was there the other week.

I just noticed that the Aigburth Arms pub has changed its name to "Victoria". Anybody know why? It is in Victoria Road of course but I don't think that is sufficient reason :)
The Red Dwarf society are going to be slightly annoyed

From Wiki:
An orphan, he was discovered as a very young infant on November 26, 2155, under a pool table in a Liverpool pub (the Aigburth Arms), nestled in a cardboard box with the mysterious word "ouroboros" scribbled on the side.
GingerTheCat, plenty of time to change the name of the pub back to the "Aigburth Arms" before November 26, 2155!!!! :PDT_Aliboronz_24:

The Lamb has partially collapsed this morning, shame as it's a great old building.
There was an MOT center next door thats been knocked down within the last couple of weeks, apartments are due to be built there.
Fairly sure the building next door wasn't attached to the pub though.
Have Anyone heard of this place it was in Marsh Lane???
Hi Bendo
I think you are correct, thank goodness. Thanks, Max for finding the following photograph by our very own Kev (ijob on Flickr) -- great photograph of the Lamb pub, Wavertree, Kev! :PDT_Aliboronz_24:

It looks from the entrance to the left hand portion of the building as if that used to be an old carriage house for the inn.

Pic from the BBC site, hopefully they have got it propped up since this was taken

Surprised you haven't complained about the traffic Bendo :)
It's 2 mins walk from me and I'd happily sit in traffic all day if work was being done to avoid pulling down the entire thing, Wavertree High Street has lots of great old buildings and I'd miss them.
Oh and it was only a 2 min diversion on the way to work and it was cleared when I was coming home.
:)
Some of you may find this collection of pub photographs interesting.

This is still in the early stages, but is something that myself and my two mates decided to put together a few months back. We had visited a few pubs around Merseyside and had taken a couple of photos when we decided that this was something we could build on. Of course, tomorrow's history is being made today! So we have been taking quite a few photos and have put them together on the net where others may enjoy them too.
We've got some older ones too which will be going on soon.
Please feel free to let me know what you think (as I say, it is early days) and if you would like to contribute any photographs then you'd be more than welcome. Of course, full credit will be given.
I'd love to hear from anyone with photographs of pubs that are no longer with us or anyone with photos of Higsons pubs.
This could prove to be an interesting collection in time to come and will act as a 'time capsule' that I, for one, would love to look back at a few years from now.
I'd like others to join in with this and expand this website to create a place for people to come and see our region's pubs both now and in times past.

Just been past the 'Birkenhead House' (as it was always known) - The Newsham ( corner of Lower Breck rd & West Derby rd) - was surprise to see it is boarded up.
That pub was always so popular and busy in all the years I remember it.
It's becoming more noticable, more and more local pubs being closed down and boarded up.
It does make you wonder why the local boozers are losing popularity.
Is it, as we have already discussed, that people don't go out as much now because of the anti-socials ? or is it because of the no smoking rule?
I have a suspicion that it is linked to the smoking ban - especially in the more working class areas.
Lindy.
Pubs have been rapidly closing down for the last couple of years.
I think the no-smoking effect will really come into effect when the weather starts getting colder (probably next week!).
I disagree that it's the no smoking ban because as was said, pubs have been closing down for the last few years. I was in London Road on sat watching the match and then in the Liverpool, James st yesterday afternoon - all were chocker. I think the city centre will continue to thrive, particularly at weekends and especially with tourists (not just overseas) but locals tend to be closing down. Having taken quite a few pub photos lately, i'm not surprised though at some of them closing, you can get as many as 5 or 6 in one small area and surely they can't all be sustained, some have had a history of closing and re-opening (the green man, the crown (kirkdale rd), The Cunard - and many more change hands frequently.
Yes, I would think that the town pubs are still doing ok.
As for the local ones, do you think it's because people are buying cheap booze and drinking it at home ? I know loads of people who just don't bother going out anymore. They either have a drink in the house, or they wait until they are on holiday before they bother with bars.
Yes Lindy, I also know plenty who'd rather have you round to theirs for a few scoops with you repaying the compliment the week after. Even my daughters and their friends now have a sit off until heading into town for 11pm to midnight, what with that bladdy Sunrise serving til 6am (but they reckon they spend most of the time having a giggle and a dance)
I heard something on the radio about 'staying in' being the new going out!
ha, (for the younger ones I mean ) :)
It's now supposed to be cool to stay in. :)
The Cumberland Arms-Netherfield Rd due to be demolished within the next couple of weeks

I don't think the smoking ban will have a a major impact on pubs' takings in the long term. People will always want to go out. It may take a bit of getting used to, but I think after a while things will return pretty much to the way they were before.
It's bingo that is experiencing a major problem as players go outside for a cigarette during the intervals between sessions. It is during the interval that a bingo club will make money from parti games or table-top bingo. This has in the past accounted for somewhere in the region of 50% of a club's revenue. A hell of a lot to lose overnight.
Does anyone ahve any information about / photographs of The Jester. Was it a Tetley's pub?
On the hill at the junction of Scotland Road and Gt. Homer Street.
Yes, they now keep their spirits on the bottom shelf.
You're not jesting there.
Hi posters
I've never been to Liverpool, but my grandad was born in Wavertree and his family lived around that area at the end of 19th century.
I plan to visit Wavertree this November and want to visit Smithdown Road, Toxteth Cemetery, Lark Lane, Holmes St., Holy Trinity Church, Christ Church, Bickerton St., Cantsfield St., Aigburth, Sefton Park, Greenhill Rd. and Allerton Rd. to take some photos and have a couple of pints in pubs where my ancestors probably did too.
However, from the photos I've seen here of the boarded up and burnt out pubs in that area, some of these places seem to be run down, rough areas these days.
Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't want to be mugged by hoodies whilst walking around like a tourist.
Any comments or suggestions from people who know these places would be appreciated.
