Legendary Liverpool Clubs Of Yesteryear.

Hi everybody, I am new to this great forum.i was trying to think of clubs of the 60/70s not mentioned-- The goodship landfall;The drift inn a brilliant club,Russel'sl was a great cabaret club,the Squires in Woolton village, the Continental showing old films on the wall,the Babalou with Dolmans discomania Dereck Dolman was a school friend of mine it was his uncle Jim Ireland who owned the Beachy,Babalou,Mardi he started of with a milk bar on Window lane Garston with his demob money, The 21 club i think it was around ullet rd remember wandering of course one night it was a bit of a dive,moving a bit further out was the Neptune preston brook great cabaret club with disco downstairs i rememember walking in early one night just after the world cup 1966 and who was sitting in the corner like two book ends but Roger hunt and Alex Lindsey they were trying to kop off all night no vip areas then as if that would hapen today cheers John---You know your getting old when somebody says you've had a fall instead of you fell over.

Hi Johnny,
Went in most of 'em. Squire's in Woolton wasn't too far from where I lived and we often went in mid-week, but I'd forgotten all about the place. I mentioned earlier in the thread that a mate of mine had been married to Jim Ireland's daughter. Though they got divorced we still always got into the Beachcomber for free.
Only went on the Landfall a couple of times and didn't really like it. Went in the Continental in later years, just before my clubbing days in Liverpool were over - moved away.

Oh I forgot all about the Landfall, isnt that the boat? It had one of those deep sea diving suits/helmets in there? I only went there once. I also forgot to mention I went to The Coconut Grove once too. and back in the 60s went to The Black Cat in London Road on the one occasion.

We went there a few times as an old schoolmate was on the door.

Yes I remember the Iron Door well, it was not far from the Cavern Club. Also I remember the Jaceranda

I went to the Squires too !, and every Sunday to the "Lines" the old Cheshire Lines club in Southmead Road Allerton! if I remember rightly there was also Johns place in Garston, it was a case of knock three times to be admitted , great after hours drinking there !! happy days...

Hi Kevin, i might of wobbled past you some night i lived off Mackets lane,another great club was the Peppermint lounge in the 60s (free soup Tuesday) i remember Heinz from the Tornados was on one week had a few drinks with him,i also nearly copped off with PP Arnold at the Regency club Widnes,there was another club that had good acts the Bobbins Garston has anybody come across anyone famous around the clubs 60/70s ? i remember walking down Mackets lane and then helping this lad to catch his dog later i found out it was George Harrison who lived on Mackets a couple of weeks later when i passed the house was surrounded with young girls John.

Hi Kevin,I might of wobbled past you at sometime or another,another club not mentioned is the Peppermint lounge very busy in the sixties i remember free soup on Tuesdays and where nurses got in free i had a few pints with Hienz who was on at the time and another good club was the Bobbins on Window lane Garston(it turned into fords club) Long John Baldry brought the house down one Friday night,also the Regency club Widnes Where i nearly copped off with PP Arnold,has any body met someone famous around the clubs of the 60/70s Johnny

I've got lots of 'nearly copped off' stories!
Never went to the Bobbins but I remember hearing about it. Didn't really go to clubs that had acts on - except for The Cavern from 1967-68. Then went to The Pyramid most Fridays. After than it was mostly Ugly's or The Beachcomber until I became a fixture in the Odd Spot from about '75. Went to other clubs occasionally but those above are the ones I spent most time in.

Nice one Steve,one thing i miss is the Liverpool humour,the odd spot was hard to get in during the sixties but was a regular haunt of mine 75/76;also the Cabin was a good club,the owner owned Llannbedre hall in Ruthin and members and friends could go there for the weekend,now that was party time,no locks on the doors ,there was also the Rembrandt club(lower down from ugleys) if you wanted to impress. That old guy on the door of the "Cabin" could be a bit of a cranky git,sometimes,but it was his club,so......!

Then we'll know each other by sight - I was pretty much in there every Thursday and Saturday in those days - often Fridays as well, which was a quiet night.
I married one of the barmaids - we're still together.

Went there the first time with a couple of Everton & Liverpool players. The next time I went by myself but Terrry and Bobby on the door remembered me - I'm very tall. Never had to pay to get in.

I too remember the Chesire Lines. There used to be a band that included 2 brothers, Cliff and Dave...including a brilliant saxophonist.
We used to drink loads of bacardi and lemon - underage too... and dance till we dropped. The floor was wooden and hollow underneath and it used to bounce as we cavorted around to the music trying to look cool.....the proprietors were really nice.
I loved the Mardi Gras, the Pyramid Club (previously Iron Door) and a place called the Pink Parrot. Anyone remember that one?

I've heard of the Pink Parrot, but I don't know where it was. I never went there.

Ha, I've not had a great deal of experience of trogs. I've always been a skinhead. But not the violent kind....

We used to shout trog or smelly after those descending the stairs of the moonstone in the precinct - but only when we thought we had a good enough starting distance for a legger.

In the days when you could swarm through there of a night.

Remember it wasn't always a 'rock' pub.When it first opened I wouldn't have been seen dead in there.Then again I would have been dead if I went in.

My older Sisters, who are in their mid Sixties, loved the Black Cat and The Blue Ball. God knows where they were. St Mathews disco was about my lot

Wasn't there a pub called The Blue Ball at the top of Prescot st ? (opposite side to the Royal hospital)

The 4 members of The Incrowd from 1967 were, Wally Quarless, Tony Fayal, George Dixon and my husband Tony Adams, known as little Tony. Tony Fayal left and was replaced by Steve Aldo (aka Eddie Bedford). George Dixon was then replace on bass guitar by Tony Lawrence COLIN Ayreety was only with the band for a short time, when Steve Aldo broke his leg in Germany. Lawrence his brother use to just get on stage when the band played the Masonic, in Bury Street. The 4 members who went on to have 4 song recorded on the Deram label, were, Wally Quarless, Tony Lawrence, Steve Aldo and my husband Tony Adams in 1969. The song were, Where in the World (which made number one in Holland), I can make love to you, Love ain't Love, and Thank you Darling. All of which I am proud to say I own. I know Wally died in 1980, the other 2 I don't know, but my husband Tony Adams, is still going strong, but retired from music in 1989. (and now has a proper 9 til 5 job)

Was Wally any relation to Leon Quarless and his cousin Noel Quarless, the boxer?
Leon was a mate in the 70s but we lost touch when I moved out of Liverpool in 78. I heard he died a few years later, still quite young.
Leon and his wife, Gina, had The Furnace on St James Street for a few years.

Enjoyed flicking through this thread brought some happy memories back.

Anyone mentioned the New Mayflower can't remember where it was exactly but it was round Rumford Place/Union Street way as a mate who worked at RSA used to drag us there when he was supposed to be doing a night shift :slywink:

It was err... cheap and cheerful.

Did my clubbing in the late 80's and remember:

Peppers in Walton
Images off Dale St
Bentleys on Brunswick St
The Swan (pub) on Wood St
Quadrant Park in Bootle
Mylo's rock club in St John's Precinct (anyone know what shop it was under? Remember it was 50p to get in)

off topic a little but sticking with the Mylo's theme there used to be a decent "alternative" shop called Extremes just off Whitechapel.

Vaguely remember a kind of Jamaican club in a house on Hope St too.

Did you go to The State Lan02 ? And the Pivvie on Sunday ? We used to go to Images midweek , and the State on Saturday , i was never that fussed on Quadrant Park though ..

The Mayflower was in Fazakerly Street off Old Hall street and we used to play there in 1980.
