The tree has been well and truly butchered,,the same was done to a row of trees by ours last year and it was surprising how much foliage grew back this summer.

The London Plane trees usually recover,I remember the Dutch Elms all over the place in the 70s,shame that:(
The Earl of Sefton (the Molineaux family) laid the foundation stone. There was a debate over the shape of the pillars by the parishes of Kirkby and Simonswood this was the result.
When the Earl built the church he stipulated that no buildings were to be built within 200 yards of it.The stone used was from the quarries in Kirkby hence Quarry Green

Although the postcard states 'Ian Maclarens Church', this was Sefton Park Presbyterian Church, Brompton Avenue/Croxteth Road. I'm not sure of the date of the postcard, but Ian Maclaren ( Rev. John Watson) died just over 100 years ago. Now demolished, 'Brompton Court' flats cover the area. Some of the perimeter wall exists.
The poet Matthew Arnold attended this church on Sunday morning, shortly before his death in Dingle Lane (source: old newspaper)

The old Christ Church in Waterloo, built in 1891/99,designed by Austin & Paley of Preston.
Constructed of Bootle sandstone, roof of Westmoreland (Cumbria) slate. This replaced a smaller church
that stood in the same place.
It`a grade 2 listed building. Due to lack of worshippers it finally closed in 1982 and was due for demolition. but some local people fought against it and the Church authorities decided to fund it.
It holds various functions now like regular local farmer`s fayres ,art exhibitions, and model, trains boats and planes exhibitions. There are no fittings inside so there is plenty of room
:handclap: Excellent pics Joe.

Does anyone know the original name of the church on Kensington, near the library, also the name of the church which used to stand on the triangle of land in West Derby Road, near Brougham Terrace?
Thanks
Brougham terrace one was Emmanuel.
That's what I call FAST, Ged. Thank you!
The one by Kensington Library is Christ Church

.....and after it closed it was taken over by Swainbanks Furniture Exporters & Auctioneers, who wrecked the inside and let it go to ruin, and then moved to Fox Street.
It is presently occupied by a religious organisation called The Gilbert Dayer Ministries, but requires extensive refurbishment

"REDEMPTION" by Arthur Dooley and Ann McTavish in Liverpool Cathedral. Sadly Arthur never got to see as he died before it was made. They were great friends and had discussed the project for a while but when Arthur died Ann carried on, using work that Athur had made for another client who kindly let her use it.
