It was a massive ship. Seems it also took part in the rescue of the passengers of another ship. Not sure when that was tho' - might have been before your uncle's time.

I knew from history she sent warnings to but didn't know about the other stuff...

from wikipedia ...On 23 January 1909 (commanded by J.B. Ranson) she rescued survivors of the collision in fog between the White Star Line's RMS Republic and the SS Florida off the north eastern coast of the U.S., after which Republic sank.

In April 1912 the Baltic sent ice warnings to the RMS Titanic before that ship sank.

She was also involved in a rescue on 6 December 1929, when she assisted the sinking schooner Northern Light.

although he did a voyage on her in 1929 he wasn't on board for the Northern Light rescue.

thanks for that Julie I hadn't got around to looking into the ships he served on too much yet as I'm still getting over the surprise of family I didn't know I had.

RMS Baltic:

She was around when RMS Republic went down off the USA. Republic is reputed to still have gold on board:

Hi, my ggrandad was one of the crew of the Baltic in 1909. They all got a CQD medal for their part in the rescue. CQD (come quick danger) was the emergency call before SOS. A photo is (hopefully) attached.

Terrific. What does it say on the medal? I believe the Titanic used CQD and then the new SOS.

Hi, unfortunately the medal passed down another line of the family. I haven't seen it in a long time.

The writing at the bottom reads "The SS Republic", then a number. The medal came with a blue-white and yellow/green ribbon.

The website for more info is The Official RMS Republic Website

THE owners of Liverpool’s Baltic Fleet pub are demanding action be taken to spruce up the adjacent building site whose derelict “ghost town” appearance, they claim, has cost them thousands of pounds in lost business. Read

Construction on the dock road has been terrible, not just by the Baltic Fleet either. They seem to keep redoing the pavements by where the Red Ship near Mann Island Is.

The builders don't clean up after themselves properly leaving allkinds of debris on the roads like sand.
