    Toxteth Customs Offices

Hi I think I posted on the wrong part of the forum but I am new to this forum so please be patient
I have two Customs Officers originally from Devon on our family tree who worked at Toxteth at different times
One James FOLLAND seems to have been there from 1830 The other William Henry Kelly died aged 33 in Toxteth having served in Appledore in 1881 he had a child born in Bow in 1883 so must have arrived in liverpool after that date but died in 1890
I would like to know if there is any way of following either man in the customs service Liverpool and particularly if William kelly's death was related to his work as a customs boatman
    Many thanks in advance

Hi trees, and welcome to Yo.

The custom's office would of kept records. Although I'm not sure whether they'll be located at Liverpool Record Office [LRO], or the National Archives at Kew? Someone on the site will be able to help though.

    Cheers,

    Daz

    Hi trees,

The LRO search archive is here. http://archive.liverpool.gov.uk/dser...Cmd=Search.tcl It might give you some clues? But as Customs is a government office, I'd expect Kew to be more useful with the records?

I found 'James FOLLAND' on the 1861 Census. He's down as "Retired Officer of Customs" residing at 6 Upper Hill Street, Toxteth Park, born in Devon.

The 1851 Census at the same address is also attached.

once again I am grateful to you Daz. I have access to the censuses I think it will definitely mean a trip to kew. If you look at James's children he seems to have served for quite a time in Ireland too. I think I will need to send for William's death certificate to find out if he died as the result of his work

6 Upper Hill street is was at the side of St. Patrick's church - opposite. The road in front of the church - left to right. The house was demolished long ago or bombed in WW2.

The site is where the warehouse is now demolished in the 1960s - a row of shops.

The church is St. Patrick's. Built around 1820. It is where William Patrick Hitler was baptized in 1911- Adolph Hitler's nephew. Hitler's brother lived in Upper Stanhope St not far away.
