    Default Three Liverpool street scenes

Girls swinging c1963 (Karl Hughes) Boy climbing street lamp c1963 (Karl Hughes) Girl in street c1953 (Frank Dugan) Three street scenes with a street light as the common factor. A perfect piece of play apparatus – not too high and with the bar at the top for hanging or swinging on. What is particularly sad is that this [...]

Great pics Colin, thanks for sharing them.
The houses in the background do look as if they are ready for demolition !

OK... the bars make a lampost a great plaything.

But -- Who knows why those bars are there?

Three cheers for a correct answer - or a pint of beer when I'm back in Liverpool in Feb...

    to rest a ladder on.
When the smoke has cleared and the bullets cease.another soldier rests in peace. The politicians who caused the fight, rest at home no danger in sight

Yep... but the reason for the ladder is that all of these old lampposts were converted from gas to electric, and the ladder was needed for frequent maintenance of the mantle...

I would guess that these lampposts date back to the turn of the previous century, and were built as gas lamps.

Anyone have a date for the conversion of Liverpool street lighting to electric?

it's true that you hesitate to take photoghraphs where there are children now.
I was going to take a photo of the 'beach' in L1 .. it looked great the other day - it was a dry, sunny afternoon and the 'beach' was very busy with kids enjoying themselves. There's even a paddling pool which is meant to be the sea.

    .. but I didn't take a photograph. I thought better of it

I did sneak a quick snap of the water bubbles by St John's Precinct though.

Brilliants pics Colin, your site too, is equally as brilliant.

On the topic of taking street photographs, it's just been on BBC Merseyside that a guy and his family were approached by security outside the Echo Arena and warned not to take any pictures because if they did they would call in the anti-terrorist police. Management at the arena are now reviewing their security policy.
