Probably went there about once a week through the early to mid 60s. Wasn't it a Gaumont in those days?

So the Landlord has given Odeon notice to leave, I wonder what bar chain has come in with a better offer then. I hope it doesn't lie empty for years. One problem to me would be the fact that if anyone does take over the site, they would have to install lifts etc to reach the top floor, bit of a ball ache really.

Maybe now they will update the frontage of the building, to me it lets down Allerton rd.

Hopefully It doesn't become a bar, theres enough of them on the end of Allerton road.

I don't remember Virgin owning It either, they owned the Edge Lane Cinema but the Allerton was only Canon and ABC before the Odeon.

Inky, you just took me back 45 years to my Saturday mornings when I was 6 or 7.

Get out of the pics and walk back to Perriam Rd stopping to play cowboys on the building site opposite Forthlin Rd then going into Haswells by Heath road spending the last of the pocket money on BlackJacks and Fruit Salad

Haswell's - there's a name from the past. Often spent my pocket money there. The guy who ran it had been in the Merchant Navy. When he gave the shop up he went back to sea and ended up in the same company as me.

The old Odeon was a pretty classy place and I remember the fountain in the foyer. I'm sure it had goldfish in it. The Mayfair in Aigburth was pretty upmarket too. That even had room for a massive ballroom on the first floor.

I remember the fountain - quite plush. Also went to the Mayfair fairly often.

In earlier days we used to go to the Saturday morning show at a flea pit we called The Lousy House. It was on the right hand side on the way out of Garston, at the top end of St Mary's road. Anyone remember the name?

Haswells, the sweetshop that stood at the corner of Heath Road and Mather Avenue, twas there in the '50's that Reggie Owen,Billy Dawber,Joey Lewis and me would get our chocolate cigars to augment our vienna loaves stuffed with hot chips and retire to the grass verge beneath the trees that led up to Woolton. Under the boughs we would talk of of sailing ships, sealing wax and cabbages and kings. Haswells was our sweet heaven, and many a boy from Gilmour Heath Road Secondary Modern chose to spend his dinner money there than in the purchase of a ticket for a school dinner. A shilling in those long ago days. I had forgotten the name of that wonderful shop until I saw that posting tonight.

It was indeed the Lyceum, became Garston Welding when it closed.

That's the one. The kids used to stamp their feet and the whole building would shake!
