I used to go to the Cavern but I quit in 1958 when the Mardi Gras opened in Mount Pleasant. It was way better, served booze, toilets didn't stink like the Cavern ones always did. Before the Cavern was a cellar club at 19 Slater St. which was run by students, the musicians were all amateurs but it was enjoyable.
I went the Mardi too. It was far, far bigger and had a bar up in the balcony as well. Some really good bands would play there.

The Cavern's toilets were in a basement below sewer level and the drains had to be pumped. It would be closed down today.
I went the Cavern after the Beatles has stopped playing there. Those tunnels were superb. The noise from the bands just came straight at you. They had benches just in front of the stage, where we would stand on when drunk and then fall off.
Visiting bands obviously thought we were all mad.
