Thread: Why is genealogy search site charging when the persons you look for are long ago dead?

Default Why is genealogy search site charging when the persons you look for are long ago dead?

I've been doing family search for the past 3years and Ancestry gave 3 days free due to a special they were doing. Many other site say they are "free", but when you get in that site and start to search they cut you off and ask for money. It should be either free as they offer or just state that you have to pay instead of tricking people

I expect they go to the lengths of collating all the information ,masses of it, and rightly wanting paying for it?????

You don't have to pay for it on the internet.

You are perfectly free to take a car/train/bus to the National Archives in Kew, or Preston Record Office or St Arseend of Nowhere's Church and look for the records yourself for free.

For any who find the information and advice on the Yo! Liverpool forum useful and/or beneficial in any way I understand that 'Kev' accepts donations to help with the upkeep of this valuable local/national/global asset.

[dear friends. The above should not be read to imply that the said 'Kev' (administrator/owner) and me have had any financial dealings. I too am pennyless and shameful.]
Why would you think that I have spent my morning reading legal documents?

A timely intervention brother O., my initial reply to roymusto's post was made on the spur of the moment, in response to his apparent bewilderment at the behaviour of some conglomerate search organisation, and not of our own facilities here on Yo!.
As I myself have been the recipient of the help and largesse of some of the generous and helpful members here with my own genealogical projects, I am mortified to think that I could be seen to be anything uther than grateful in the extreme for their erndeavours and hard work on my behalf.
Were it not for my seemingly permanent position of penuriousness, I would gladly shove a few shekels in the direction of our Leader.
Before these waters become any murkier, I shall exit, head bowed .

The LDS records on-line are still free.

They are good on Scottish church records, with their missionaries microfilming all of the church books in the 60's, and later putting them on-line.

...and they don't try and convert you...

What I remember of the Church of Scotland; there was dam-nation in all things. That all were dam-ned if they did and dam-ned if they didn't.

Maybe... but it got pretty close to 100% of the population in the 1800's into the births and marriages book of the parish register....
For some reason the recording of deaths came later.

How true. Imagine the cost to travel from Liverpool to Kew. One problem
is very few sites contain all the info,ie, you may want a record and you are
a member of Ancestry, the record isn't there, but it is on find my past but
to get it you have to subscribe.

But only after 1855... from the web site -

The statutory registers comprise the official records of births, marriages and deaths in Scotland from 1 January 1855 when civil registration replaced the old system of registration by parishes of the Established Church (Church of Scotland).

Before that it was church based, and all of those records are free on the LDS web site. I also think that maybe 1855 was when the deaths were recorded.

    Scotlandspeople charges for access.

In the 70's my father paid reseachers to find family history directly from the Scottish records (pre-internet......)

When the entire records became available on-line, it was obvious that some of these paid researchers did not do a good job, and omitted, didn't follow links or slightly distorted the data.

Looking at his letters, the entire process took much longer by mail...

Going to the LDS center in Los Angeles - only a few miles from where I lived - was a bit faster, but scrolling through microfilm was tedious.

We have got our family traced back to around 1670, but church records got destroyed around that time with the dispute that created the Church of Scotland...

    Hooray for the Internet....
