And it won an award off the Concrete Society, this is attached to top of one of the pillars as if they are ashamed of it.

Lol, correct Joe. That's on my 5th pic down. They may have been officially opened on 15th April 1972 but I can assure you they were in use well before that - possibly unofficially

They acted as places to hide during mass hide n' seek games that centred all around the area, sometimes continuing on for days on end. Also of course, the obligatory bike lanes, especially those long slopes and curly whirly spirals. A pain for what they were really meant for though, women trying to get from one side of Byrom Street to the other with small children and prams.
Great pictures. I had a couple of trips to Byrom street to see what the 'Poly' was like and I loved those curvy flyovers!

What have you got when you have Kerry Katona up to her neck in concrete?

    Not enough concrete.

Nice pics Ged, I remember the flyover being open around 1970, maybe it took 2 years for the concrete to go off?

Tally man, ha, i'm not as old as you sir. I remember those games well and kick the can. Hiding behind the statues in St Johns gardens and in the sunken flowerbeds. They went on for hours and were sometimes carried over. The searches went right into town when you could walk through the precinct.
