I remember a week after Hendersons fire going with my mate over the water to look at an enlarger for sale in the Echo. The seller invited us in to his home and showed us some 20 inch by 16 inches photos he had taken of the fire. He had contacted the Daily Express when he took the photos, they published one full page,on the front of the paper.
This was when they were broadsheet size,He was paid £100 pounds for his pics and they were all printed 20by 16 for him. Imagine £100 in those days.

P S We never bought the enlarger

There's a photograph of this area of Church St. I've seen somewhere on the net and I'm sure it was dated May 1960, which would make it a month before the fire.
It was a view looking towards Lord St. and had the Tatler, H.Samuel and Hendersons in it.

They sold handmade chocolates too!!! Hendersons and the old Bon Marche which became part of George Henry Lee`s were the poshest shops in the 50s and 60s, along with Watson Pritchard (if it was called that) which was in North John Street and was even more scary.
    Well,you've got a good memory for a 5 yr old!! I'm afraid shop's like Hendersons,G.H.Lee,and Lewis's were another world for me,it was T.J.Hughes,or Blackler's,if anywhere!
