Default The Liverpool Gymnasium Training College for Women

I was having a mooch through the old postcards for sale on ebay and came across two cards relating to the Liverpool Gymnasium Training College. I've never heard of it before, does anyone know where it was/is?

That was by Liverpool Cricket ground wasn't it? I remember when I left school that there was an option to serve an apprenticeship there.

I'm beginning to suspect that although it was called The Liverpool Gymnasium Training College that it wasn't actually in Liverpool. There's a 'London, W.' on the bottom right of the cards which I thought was where the card was printed rather than where the place it depicts was.

Yes, that's the one. I think it was for officers though.

I seem to remember that the apprenticeship was for a mechanic so it must have been through the REME at Deysbrook Barracks as I lived in Croxteth at the time.

I knew that one - Riversdale College - my dad taught there...

It was Merchant Marine and taught sailors to get a higher ticket. My neighbor got his Engineers qualification there.

I believe it is now an old folks home.

To be honest, I didn't know anyone that worked at Deysbrook Barracks that wasn't a civvie. My father-in-law worked there as did most of our darts team. I think most of them were general maintenance and a couple of them were mechanics.

    Smile Google wins again...

    A 1907 page is here...

    http://books.google.com/books?id=bxw...ollege&f=false

The college was on 171 Bedford St.

I bet it later expanded and the womens part became Barkhill PE Training College (now IM Marsh) near Holt's field, Mossley Hill.

As the beer drinking uni students of the 60's called it -- "home of the Amazon Women"....
