We did a lot of Shipping for James Troop on Sefton Street in the early 1980s, Bob Cain was the man who gave us the work, nice chap he was but I suspect your time there will have been before that John.

Yes. I can't recall that name. What type of shipping? They were ship repairers, with a specialty in engines.

becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the

I recall that ramming. The Echo once had a piece on Mr Oxton who said he was the last fisherman operating in the Mersey. You may know more than me on that.

He lived behind us and we always had fresh Flukes. He went around to Wales to catch the fish.

I had a classmate at Heath Rd.,a boy called Roy Pendleton, when his Dad died ,Roy inherited his fishing boat and I often wondered what happened to him. The last time I saw him he was sweeping St.Mary's Rd. and a more contented young person you would'nt find. Any of you Garston folk recall him? He was hard to miss being of a "generous " build and always had the time of day for anyone.

Yes, it was engines and spare parts both import and export. We also did lots for Marine manpower services on the industrial estate that was on Ormskirk Road, Aintree before the retail park, a couple of Scottish blokes ran it.

Troops tended to do ships services: plumbing, electrics, engines, sheet metal. They would make the parts for engines, engine room equipment like steam (steam was used to start the engines), etc, if the part was not available. If a Japanese ship was in and needed a part, because they engiens were totally alien, they would make it.

They were Rolls Royce engine agents.

He couldn`t have been the last ,my brother carried on long after Mr Oxton lost his boat.
BBC TV did a series of programmes called "Through one pair of eyes" featuring our kid and the late Arthur Dooley, the famous sculptor, who our kid was friendly with,on board his fishing nobby. I remember our kid saying to him his sculptures were rubbish and Arthur replying, I know but people are buying them. The old Mersey Mirror ran an article on our kid as Liverpool`s last Fisherman with the whole front page a photo of him.
