    Why rename them?

People will know the Elephant one as the famous Elephant.

Max, if today is the day for correcting people, shouldn't it be King John, not St John?

Because it'll have to fit in with their new image (the Dovedale became Alma de Santiago)

Makes their argument that the elephant head was only taken down (not smashed!) for restoration sound a bit suss.

A lady who lives in Mason Street (opposite the Elephant) says the head went into a skip!

    I hope that ain't true.

When I was In Woolton once with one of my cameras taking pics of the Elephant was funny when some of the girls started posing at the window. I prefered It as the Famous Elephant.

They own Dovedale Towers too but the Dovedale Towers Writing Is still on the building.

Hopefully it went initially into a skip and is being kept for putting up again. It would seem to me that since Alma de Cuba and Alma de Santiago have some exotic decor, I should think the new establishment at the Elephant would also. Thus the elephant head would fit right in. So I should think it would be in their interests to restore it and replace it... if it hasn't been destroyed.

I'm starting to dislike the Korova group bars now. Alma de Cuba was interesting and different, Alma de Santiago I don't think much of, and the one in Lark Lane (something beginning with N) is just the Masonic painted black with red seats.

I used to live in Woolton and Gateacre and I'm sure the Elephant was only refurbished in the last 18 months.
Hope they don't do anything too grotesque to it as it could be a nice boozer to have an afternoon in.

The Elephant used to be a nice pub with real ale on tap too, then the previous owners got rid of the ale and catered for the younger market. That took me to the White Horse and I've never looked back

I say the next forum meet up should be at the White Horse.

Only Woolton Pub I've ever been to was the one they have In Woolton Hall and that was In 2004.

Dunno, but it makes them sound a bit knobs.
It was ok for the Alma De Cuba but the former Dovedale sounds daft and when the main lights are switched on at the end of the night you can see it's slighty manky (like the duct tape on the ceiling above the bar.

A friend of mine is moving out of Gateacre village in a few weeks and we were going to go for a wander into all the decent pubs in the area.
Don't think it'll be worth it now.

I'll second that sir! But don't go on a Friday night - standing room only
