My aunt and uncle lived in South Hill Rd for many years, their house was right at the bottom end of the road with a garden and funnily enough their son Raymond Unsworth was in the merchant navy with Blue Funnel Line perhaps he got in the back of your cab at one time! He brought great presents home from his many trips visiting that little house down the 'south end" as my mother used to call it was a real treat.
Quite possible Doris! Bob Mitcheals operated from his home situated about midway down Sth Hill rd.

Who would have thought grass would surround the Florence Institute, we could have a thread on the greening of Liverpool. I know it takes time to get these restoration projects underway but a bit off grass does soften the often desolate feel while the work goes on.

..or the slope of the land. Google Earth says the Yates St. is around 5 ft lower than Corn St. immediately behind the building shown.
This google street view shows the slope at the end of the street opposite the church -

I can see the reason for the terracing, but when you consider the steepness of the streets in Netherfield rd,etc? Is it just a different technique?
A view from Sandhills Station, football pitches cover some old streets,Aspinall.Rockingham,Flinders and Lathom St. The white building is the old Grosvenor cinema now a Funeral Directors, alongside is the old U A B(Social security) building.
Red brick building on the left is the old British American tobacco factory now apartments, the heights on Netherfield look as if they are having a makeover.
Whenever I stand on Sandhills station my mind always wanders back to my childhood days as we never travelled more than 2 miles from the area till we started working.
