Look at the large office building erected in the 40 years to WW2, it was astonishing. Then after WW2. Nothing!

Deprived of its unique dockland waters Liverpool
becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the
tourist. Would we visit a modernised Venice of filled in
canals to view its modern museum describing
how it once was?

I've always wondered about that.
That building was mysteriously called Government Buildings, and (apart from the GPO, another Government building) was the only building in that part of Liverpool to be bombed so badly it had to be demolished.
And the site has only been used as a car park ever since.
Why?
I love this buliding. We've had the ventilation tower posted before, but here's some I took the other day.
There must be lots of art-deco on the cimema threads as well?

For another hidden Art Deco treasure, check out St Monica's, Fernhill Road, Bootle. 3 Angels on outside. I got a bit lost in the area today, and had to pull over to admire the building. Sorry, haven't got any photos, but you can easily find them online.
Architect was Francies Xavier VELARDE, who also did St Matthew's in Clubmoor.
Art Deco could be accused of being bland with what had gone before but it is very distinctive.
Here is my tame effort of the current subject.

I love St Monicas. There's something about it that makes you just want to stand and stare up at it. It must be the dimensions.
We have a lovely art deco church in Anfield (St Columba) http://www.ship-of-fools.com/mystery/2007/1425.html
it's a handsome looking church, but St Monicas is more impressive in size.
Any photos anywhere of the shop F.G. Thomas in Bold Street. They moved in the late 60's. It was a heraldic stationers and had a department for wedding invitations, wedding cake decorations (some in sterling silver) Wedding napkins, tablecloths, everything you needed but very expensive.
