Default The River Plate Fresh Meat Company

Does anybody have any information on the following companies in particular on Old Hall Street, Liverpool?

The River Plate Fresh Meat Company.
The British & Argentine Meat Company.

My great grandfather was a New Yorker who worked as a foreman/cattleman on the ships between various US ports and Liverpool. He married in 1907 in Liverpool and his in-laws (McArdle) business changed from being coal merchants (1905-1908) to meat in 1910.

Their address was 80 Old Hall Street - listed as the River Plate Fresh Meat Co (1910-1914) and then the British & Argentine Meat Co in 1915.

I am sure his connections influenced this change in business however, curiously the premises was listed as W. Wilson & Sons, Butchers in 1901 !!!

I've got various maps showing the company's warehouses (Great Howard Street area) and another shop on Vauxhall Road/Eldon Place. I think they were a sort of franchise.

I remember this Company in the 30's. They also had a shop in Melrose Road,
    Kirkdale.

The River Plate Fresh Meat Company.
The British & Argentine Meat Company.

    Both names ring distant bells.
After some thought the only thing I can give you in the way of info is the name "Fray Bentos". (a brand name and a port in South America).
Hope that helps in any way.

I will search my skull for any more.

both of the companys you mention are subsideries of the fray bentos corporation.
have you tried typing the names into the internet to see what they come up with, they might hold some useful information.

    Default Irwins?

Since my reply about the Argy I've been trying to place whereabouts it
actually was along Melrose Road - I don't remember it as a very imposing
shop. Was it near the corner with Rumney Road West? Staying in the area,
wasn't there an Irwins grocery somewhere along there - one of a small chain
as I recall. And have they all gone? There used to be a small corner shop on
two or three of the streets dropping into Melrose Road, quite apart from the
pub. It still mystifies me how they all made a living. Stan H
