    Default The Russian Streets, Stoneycroft

This may well have been mentioned before, but has anybody got any info on these streets.

Kremlin Drive, Russian Drive, Moscow Drive.

When were they built, why were they given these Russian names. There has to be a connection. I'd be interested to find out.

Hi Ross not sure of exact dates, but they were laid out in the second half 19th century. The land was owned by an evangilist called Heber Radcliffe and he went on a mission to Russia. Whilst he was away his family developed the streets and gave them Russian themes.

( from a "local" book by Colin Gould )

    Kremlin Drive

Probably Kremlin Drive's most notable resident was Robert James Minnintt, who in 1933 revolutionised hospital childbirth techniques when he patented his "Gas-Air Analgesia Apparatus". His invention combined air and nitreous oxide in such proportions that it produced analgesia ( freedom from pain ) without anaesthesia ( lack of conciousness ). He lived at 73 Kremlin Drive.

( from same book as above )

    Russian Drive

Charles Cheers Wakefield, Lord Wakefield of Hythe, once resided in Russian Drive. He was an oil merchant and invented a Vacuum automatic oiler for engines. He was a keen traveller and wrote a book entitled "Our Future Trade In The Far East" in which he predicted that Japan would become a major economic force.

( again from the same book )

    Moscow Drive

A former resident of Russian Drive was Samuel Mason Hutcinson, Mayor of Liverpool in 1910 - 1911. During his term of office the great strike took place and he had to call in police from Birmingham and other areas to maintain order.
