Hornby F Lowe Cutlers, School Lane 1982

The old Pier Head bus station from the top of the Liver Building 1984

Looking the other way on the same murky day in 1984

Hope Street: Philharmonic Pub and Cathedral of Christ the King 1983

Inside the old Riverside Station 1981. (experimentally scanned from 35mm contact sheet so excuse fuzziness).

Abandoned goods shed somewhere on the North Docks 1981

Pier Head 1982 (before the days of Legoland- and Photoshop!)

St. Andrew's, Rodney Street, the day after the fire: December 1982

Corner of Sefton Drive and Ullet Road, August 1983

Street artist (me!) and young admirers, Williamson Square 1986. Used to make good money at this but it wrecked my knees.

Hmm, well my favourite spot was in Church Street until some boy copper said I was causing an obstruction and told me "if I see you here again you're nicked". I then moved into Williamson Square where I was left in peace. Money wasn't as good there though. Never worked in Bold Street.

I remember seeing a pavement artist doing Biblical pics in Church st but I seem to remember a long haired fella with a pony tail.

James William Carling was a Bold St pavement artist in the olden days, born in Addison st and had works published in Edgar Allen Poe's the Raven. JWC is buried in a paupers grave in the cemetery off Rice Lane.

There was a time I was "a long haired fella with a pony tail" but that was long ago. (but I do still have a decent thatch even now, thankfully- my little bro lost all his when a teenager!)

I found that religious scenes were popular- I often, for example, did Greek Orthodox-style Madonna and Child icons. Old ladies would cross themselves and chuck in a quid! I only once got harangued for 'sacrilege'..
A common thing was that I'd come back the following day to find that the faces had been neatly removed in the night...

Fascinating stuff about James Carling and new to me. Was any of his pavement art ever recorded I wonder?

At least when doing those religious scenes, if ever a copper pulled you up for having the begging bowl out, you could always say it was for the church roof fund

More on James William Carling here Steve.

    Great pictures!

Hornby. F. Lowe in School Lane, I used to get my shears sharpened in there twice a year. I was a tailors cutter. there where old shears hanging from the ceiling. It was like an aladdins cave inside with Knives and shears everywhere. an old man used to sharpen the shears in the back on a grinding stone. I think it closed down soon after he died.

Too kind- ta very much. Lots more to come. I'm looking hard at acquiring a neg/slide scanner as I've had to pack in my darkroom. Will start a proper root through the masses of negs then..
