    Default Churchill Way Flyover Area

Anger at go-ahead for new city hotel

Mar 19 2008 by Nick Coligan, Liverpool Echo

A NEW hotel will be built in Liverpool city centre despite complaints from nearby residents.

The 72-bedroom complex will form part of a 10-floor building on Byrom Street, under the Churchill Way flyover.

The site was previously home to John Moores university student halls of residence, which were demolished last year.

The building, approved by Liverpool council’s planning committee yesterday, will also contain offices, an underground car park and ground-floor shops.

Residents in the neighbouring Marybone estate had objected, saying they did not want another high-rise complex constructed around their homes.

Councillors also approved John Moores university’s proposal to build a new psychology and sports science department at its Byrom Street campus.

The building , which will be on a car park, should be ready for autumn 2009.

Am I thinking of another area or did that not used to be the white building under the flyover that was once a pub?

!Don’t know if it was a pub, but it was a white building formerly JMU halls.

Hopefully the catalyst for some regeneration along Scottie rd.

Can't help feeling those houses in the neighbouring estate are starting to look more out of place, as the city centre expands north.

I wouldn’t miss them if they went but I'm sure the usual brigade will come out and argue how we should have more quality homes like that in our city centre!

wondered what was happening with that site. the students accom was all done up nice, then next thing it was getting ripped to bits again.

the pub was where the wasteland bit with cars on is now. the accom was behind it.

There were two pubs on that site. The Byrom aka the pie shop fronted onto Byrom street and was a plain 60s type buidling only two storeys high. This was surrounded by a works called D. Evans/Tapley. The corner of the block that became Imperial Halls student residence was originally the Dart public house and was incorporated into the residence in the 1990s.

As for the local houses being out of place. We have to remember who was here first. There has been housing in this area for donkeys years, first with the courts/slums - then the Fontenoy Gardens tenements blocks and the coffin blocks up on Standish Street/Marybone. It's only fair that these residents were given new homes but just a few years later, big multi story student accommodation was lumped right behind them overlooking their gardens etc etc.

I believe another high rise is sheduled for the corner of Gt Crosshall st/Fontenoy St too.

Quite right Ged, the houses where there first, but my point was looking more to the future of the estate, if another high rise goes in, I wonder what that will do for the area or aspirations of any developers?

A different area but a similar situation would be the houses that now face the Q Car park at the rear of the Liverpool 1, clearly they where there before the developments where even thought of, but they stick out like a sore thumb these days.

Family accommodation should not be in that area any more. A city moves and changes with time. The centre and its new complexion is moving that way, and it should do too as the centre was becoming lop-sided moving to the south end.

Yes, let's move everyone out like they did on Scottie in the 60s only for most of that land to have lay derelict ever since.

A city morphs as time rolls on. A few inappropriate public authority bungalows in the wrong place should not stop a city expanding.

The destruction of Scotland Rd was social vandalism. Running a motorway through an inner city area near the centre was appalling. The second road crossing should have been a double level bridge with rail and road, killing two birds with one stone. It could have been from New Brighton to Bootle at very High Level. Then the rail network could have looped through the Wirral. But rail was not wanted as the Road Transport Lobby has some political parties in their pocket. The bridge would have give the city another identifiable icon and greater bond with the river.

The Wallasey Tunnel was a massive mistake.

As a kid all around me in Liverpool 8 was Victorian. Then the 1960s wipe out of the Victorian part. Then they were demolished and the 1980s bungalows came. These may go soon and another phase. I have seen 3 Liverpool 8s so far and maybe a 4th. All in one person lifetime. What district in the world has been rebuilt 3 or 4 times in such a short time?

The public money over 50 years that has been poured into the area is scandalous. Money poured down the drain. Each time the working class occupants destroy their own environment.

It would have been much, much cheaper to have given them houses to own and then it is up to them after. Well they sort of in the Council House sell offs. The flats never were taken into account.

A similar thing happened with the 'Queens rd estate' Breck rd.
It has changed 3 times in my life time. It was originally Victorian houses which were swept away to make way for a new estate, the design based on a Swedish village (Ha!!) - - the 'Swedish village' quickly became neglected and run down, and gaining a bad reputation with anti-social behavior. (like the 'Cornish village' which was built over on Everton rd side .. you have to smile at the ideas they come up with !! Cornish fishing village . ha,ha ) Next, in recent years, the estate had a make-over and is presently looking ok.

Why though, has money been spent on refurbishing some areas - not once, but 2 and 3 times - and yet others are totally overlooked and left to rot -ie, Oakfield rd,Townsend lane areas of Anfield - two important main roads and yet left to crumble.

The Radcliffe estate was another piece of land that has changed 3 times in my lifetime up till now. Originally lined with buildings similar to those on Shaw Street, Westbourne and Eastbourne street swept and winded uphill from behind shaw street park at Village street - my auntie lived in Radcliffe street. All demolished to make way for a new estate modelled on a cornish village - trouble was it was a rat run for thieves and car robbers escaping the police who knew the mazes only too well. A hazard for fire engines getting in to any emergency too as it was all pedestrianised. It must have been one of the shortest lived estates ever built. The area is now covered with the 'new' type red brick boxes that we are so prevalent from the mid 1980s.

We just don't know how to build, or manage, social housing. The places are not policed, in many ways, and offender not prosecuted. When they do get them to court the naive judges (from private school backgrounds) let them off.

The great thing about this government is the anti-social laws it introduced. Now we need social lessons in schools to nip it at the bud, and create a socially aware generation.
