Well that brought back memories - he doesn't look much older does he?? Wish I could say the same for myself Carla Thomas on the Empire - I didn't see that one - I went to see the Jackson 5 in the early 70s - paid top dollar for the best seats (£1.75!!!) and when they came on stage the crowd were running over the back of the seats to get to the front - ended up at the back after being trampled on - footprints all over me good flares. A hard lesson was learned about going to gigs - don't bother paying top dollar - just learn to run quicker.

I saw some great Motown acts on the Empire ; Stevie Wonder, Martha Reeves & the Vandellas, the fabulous Temptations (I loved them most of all .. I couldn't believe I was actually seeing them live !)

Gladys Knight & the Pips I saw on the Southport theatre. Edwin Star at Reeces (Parker st).

..... Reeces - now that really is giving my age away

Yeh - concerts were affordable in those days - even if you had to save all your pocket money for months - queue up in the rain (sag off school first) - and you'd be made up bragging to all your mates! I can't afford to go to concerts now - need a second mortgage. There's nobody like the Temps or Tops anymore anyway - nobody worth seeing. It's better to go to small venues and see up and coming stuff. Or stay in....aaahh poor me!

I've got a vague memory I think sometime in the early/mid 80s of the Jac being a bit of a squat club with corrugated steel sheeting across the door that

you had to move out of the way to get in? Don't know for sure so does anyone remember this or have I hallucinated it?

In the 50's the Jac was a fair venue, hard rockin' and lots

    of chicks. (a squat bar????)

Not official - they'd broken in and

taken over it and (this is really so vague - I blame the beer) they sold cans of lager downstairs. I'm sure I've got the right place - it was when Slater

st. only really had the Marlbourough on it and was very run down.

    Not sure - failing memory...

Well there you go - I thought the Marlborough Hotel had always been there on the corner with Seel st. facing what is now Slaters bar. Maybe it

    was called something else?

Could be memory problems for me, probably a place of little interest for us. I can only think clearly on my hog.

At the top of Bold St. Originally the entrance was around a narrow alleyway at the back backing onto the rail lines. They were fussy

who they let in - so they grabbed me by the neck and said come in.

The building was nice and not bad inside either. The clientelle were scum. All Speke was bad. I knew of not one decent

    place in Speke.
