It's in this thread because the brick built tower is a railway vent.

As you can see, half of this 18th century building was demolished last summer.
It goes without saying it wasn't Listed.

Luckily, however, it's getting rebuilt, in the original style it looks like.

I did hear somewhere that the '911' building was a vent. I think it was in the Echo. Anyway, there is a similar one in Upper Mann Street and I've definitely heard trains pass at this point. Click on satellite, for a better view.

Re: Grenville Street: I checked today and the Star Wars mural is still there, but I don't know if it can be accessed. It's the only side not shown on the pics of that vent, earlier in this thread. One would need a wide-angle lens to capture it properly.

Yes, the '9/11' is definitely a railway vent, as is the other one, on the next corner in Great George Street.
They're shown on the 1906 OS map as walls without a roof, which is what they are.
In fact, as well as the rebuilt Wapping vent, they're the only Victorian structures to survive in Great George Street, apart from the Blackie.

Not many people know this but the small steel vents were once for the sewer systems and there are still quite a few dotted around. One on Edge Lane by Wavertree Park and one by Broadgreen Hospital springs to mind, the latter was in the Echo as it was going to be taken down to be refurbished.

how small? I've seen a few large ones which I assume to be sewer vents as there are no tunnels marked up the map near them.

Victoria/Waterloo Tunnel, they're marked by circles (because they're circular?).
Gladstone St/Vauxhall Rd; (Cutting at Hodson/Byrom St); Wilde St./Norton St., (actually just on the other side of the tunnel!); Elizabeth St., near Crown St.; Paddington/Minshull St.; Elm Grove/Paddington; and Woodside St., near Wavertree Rd.
I'd never realised before that one tunnel had square vents and t'other circular.
I'd assumed it was when they were built that determined if they were square or circular, so that's interesting. would they have been for different railway companies?

as for the Myrtle/Chatham one, there's nothing obvious on the aerial map. lots of trees about so that could be covering it.

They are mainly to allow air "into the system, so as not to create a suction that restricts flow. Have a full bottle or water and turn it upside down to see what I mean. Have a pan full of water and turn that upside down.

I think this is one at the rear of the 'Blackie'. There was an old mural on the side to right, but I couldn't get to it because of apartments being built. This was re-painted this week and a new mural installed titled 'Liverpool'. I think it depicts imigration into Liverpool, from what I can tell. A vent at the other end of Gt. George Street has been demolished.
