    Just in-case you don't know what I am going on about see Sirobs post on this thread number 296

    I agree. they could put it at the end of William Brown St. Plenty of pavement space there. it would look fabulous restored. sometimes the council just seem to miss these opportunities. look how good the restored toll booth is.

    didn't it used to be in the large objects museum with some of the old toll booths? or is my memory failing me...again

It would terrific if it was excavated, or even partly excavated and high quality buildings built around the water space.

    Great buildings. What Hitler never managed to do, our council succeeded in doing

    not too sure where it was but its been laid to rest in a council depot.
    it even lit up, there are plenty of places it would look great and much better than the lamb bananas which seem to be popping up everywhere.

    Here's a rare close-up shot of the Customs House after it was bombed in WW2 but before it was demolished. The statue of William Huskisson (by J. Gibson) is outside. It looks like the statue is on top of the air-raid shelter but I imagine it was actually behind it.

    The statue was moved to Princes Avenue in 1954 so the photo is before that date.

    Blundellsands;

    By 1907, there was seven large houses on the seaward side of Burbo Bank Road North. Between them and the sea were large gardens and sand dunes up to 25 foot high. After about 1910, the migration of the mouth of the river Alt southwards had lowered the beach by approx. ten feet, allowing waves to reach and start eroding the dunes. This process was so rapid that the houses had to be demolished and the sea washed away their foundations. In 1936 the Alt was diverted out to sea, half way between Hightown and Hall Road, but even in 1948 the erosion continued. Tipping of tinworks **** and then rubble formed a barrier from the Alt breakwater to Brighton-le-Sands eventually. Finally a promenade completed the job.
    All photo's are credited R. Kay Gresswell, who produced a comprehensive study of this coastline.

    Burbo Bank Road North washed away, Spring 1931

    The same in 1948, with tipping in progress.

    This is how the photo appeared in "A Miller'sTale: a history of J. Bibby and Sons Ltd., Liverpool" by J B & C L Bibby (1978).

    Bibby's H/O in King Edward Street was designed by W Aubrey Thomas.

    My Mothers neighbour had this pic on his wall. Here is a phot of it through the glass. It puts the art-deco column in more perspective.
    Also;
    The Stork Hotel, Queens Square, being demolished in 1976
    Great Charlotte Street in 1970

    Anyone remember the name of the pub on the left in picture 3? Spanish House or something like that? There were always crates and sacks of vegetables stacked up under the windows.

    The pub in Great Charlotte Street was called The Spanish House Hotel, if you could see it through the piles of veg crates!
