Great to see cold cases being re-opened and hopefully solved. Maybe a bit late though.

Default New leads in 1970 Liverpool murder inquiry

BBC News, Monday, 18 February 2008, 20:00 GMT

The case of a woman murdered in Liverpool 38 years ago has been reopened in light of new evidence.

Lorraine Jacob was 19 when she went missing on 1 September 1970. Her body was found the next day and she had been sexually assaulted and strangled.

The case is being reinvestigated after the death of Harvey Richardson, 78, from Wigan, Greater Manchester.

Police found a handwritten note at his home containing details of the murder, plus a gun and an item of clothing.

    Shoe box

An air rifle was found in the house along with a shoe box containing newspaper cuttings and notes relating to the murder.

Lorraine was last seen walking alone on Pilgrim Street towards Hardman Street late at night.

Her body was found early the following day by refuse workers in a back alley behind the Young Women's Christian Association in Rodney Street.

Some of her clothing was missing.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police could not confirm whether the item of clothing found at Mr Richardson's house belonged to Lorraine Jacob and no further details were released.

Mr Richardson died of cancer on 9 February in a hospice in Wigan.

Police were then made aware of the items found at his home in Reservoir Street, Aspull.

Detectives are now appealing for anyone who knew him to come forward.

It is believed that he lived in Huskisson Street, Liverpool, and worked in a restaurant, possibly called The Mariners, at the time of the murder.

Det Supt Ian Kemble said: "We are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who knew Harvey Richardson at the time of the murder, either socially or as a work colleague, as information they could have could be vital."

It would seem that the murderer left a deathbed confession. . .

One for Ste to add to his website methinks as it's a strange and interesting conclusion by the sounds of it. R.I.P. Lorraine. I wonder what her surviving family think of it.
