I don't know why. It is an assault ship. Its predecessor, Intrepid, is to be scrapped at Canada Dock. Intrepid was in a James Bond film and the command ship for the Falklands war. A few months before the war it was to be sold to the Argentinians.

Deprived of its unique dockland waters Liverpool
becomes a Venice without canals, just another city, no
longer of special interest to anyone, least of all the
tourist. Would we visit a modernised Venice of filled in
canals to view its modern museum describing
    how it once was?

Went and had a peek into the Walker Art Gallery to see the painting of Liverpool being done by Ben Johnson and his team. It was very interesting indeed and urge anyone interested to go and have a look.

BARROW-BUILT WARSHIP A BIG HIT IN LIVERPOOL
    Published on 16/02/2008

    BIG ATTRACTION: The Barrow-
    built HMS Bulwark, berthed in
front of the Liver Buildings in
    Liverpool

A BARROW-BUILT warship has proved a hit in Liverpool.

The shipyard’s pride and joy, the amphibious assault ship HMS Bulwark, enjoyed a successful four-day visit to the city in its European City of Culture year.

Berthed at the cruise liner terminal in the shadow of the famous Liver Building with its mythical Liver birds on the roof, the Plymouth based Bulwark attracted the attention of local people who crowded on to the jetty to see one of the Royal Navy’s newest and most capable warships.

It also played host to visits from Liverpool groups and organisations including Sea Cadet Units, schools, Royal Naval Association Branch, Mersey Naval and Maritime Society and World Ship Society. The crew also played several sporting fixtures against Liverpool teams.

The assault ship is sailing in company with Plymouth-based HMS Cornwall and is flying the flag of the head of the Royal Navy’s Amphibious Task Group Commodore Peter Hudson.

HMS Bulwark and HMS Cornwall stopped in Liverpool en-route to a multi-national amphibious exercise in Norway called Armature Borealis 08.

HMS Bulwark is planning to return to Liverpool later this year to join in the city’s Battle of the Atlantic celebrations.

Bulwark’s Commanding Officer Captain Jeremy Blunden said: “The ship’s company have really enjoyed the opportunity to relax and enjoy the delights of Liverpool prior to deploying on a busy exercise period in Norway.

“The berth at Pier Head is a high-profile position in central Liverpool and we generated a great deal of interest among the general public.”

HMS Bulwark is the Royal Navy’s newest commando assault and command and control ship and is twin sister to HMS Albion, also built in Barrow.

She was launched in November 2001.

Bulwark has a ship’s company of 390, a quarter of whom are made up from 4 Assault Squadron Royal Marines.

The ship can also carry up to 700 troops and her flight deck can accommodate two Chinook or two Merlin helicopters. A large floodable dock holds four large landing craft – with another four carried on davits on the ship’s side.

HMS Bulwark opens to the public

A Royal Navy warship is welcoming visitors onboard while it is berthed at Liverpool's new cruise liner terminal.

The amphibious assault ship docked on
    Friday

HMS Bulwark arrived in the city on Friday and is the first of many ocean liners and Royal Navy ships set to berth at the Pier head this summer.

The amphibious assault ship has a crew of 325 and can carry up to 400 troops, six tanks or 30 armoured carriers.

The 176m-long (577ft) ship, which docked on Friday, will open to the public between 1230 and 1700 BST.

This is the second time she has visited the city this year - she paid a short visit to Liverpool in February before taking part in an exercise in and around Norway.

The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Paul Clark, said: "It is a great honour to have one of the Navy's new generation of amphibious assault ships visiting the city for four days, and many will be taking a tour of the ship on the Sunday.

"It will be a great maritime weekend for the city."
